This is something a bit special, and has to be one the lowest mileage W124's currently available. Supplied by J.R Tagger in December 1993, this is one of the first "full facelift" W124 Saloons to grace UK roads. It was supplied to quite a prolific surgeon, who later became a minister in the labour government of the early" noughties", and who following his retirement from government, subsequently became a member of the House of Lords. This particular gentleman owned this vehicle right up to 2014, when it was sold to a collector, who has a penchant for ultra low mileage vehicles; I recently bought this and an equally special W201 190E from him, as he was reducing his collection of vehicles.
During the 20+ year ownership of this car, it was registered to the titled gentleman, c/o Joe Macari Sportscars, who looked after the vehicle on his behalf, and which also served to protect the owners personal details too. I believe this is quite a common practice.
Now, it's completely obvious to anyone that this car has been barely used and has been extremely well maintained, however as is the nature of vehicles like this, there is little formal service history from the period 1993-2014. This is reflected in the asking price; aif the car did come with a full formal history, then it would be considerably more expensive. When I bought this car I admit I was somewhat concerned myself about this lack of history, but one look at the car, immediately allayed any reservations or doubts I had. At the end of the day you can have all the service history in the world, but if the car itself is a load of rubbish, it means absolutely nothing; after all you can't drive around in the service history. Naturally I always try to source vehicles in superb condition with excellent provenance, but if it's a choice between the two, I'd chose condition each and every time, and it's in that department this W124 E280 excels, and it's probably one of the best W124's I've ever driven; it's astonishing, and almost like a new vehicle in many respects.
Bodywork is also equally superb, and all the problem areas associated with the W124 (wings, inner wings, jacking points, jacking tubes, sub frame mountings) are all superb condition, and its one of the best preserved facelift W124's I've seen. This is probably down to the fact that the vehicle has spent most of its life in London. To ensure the vehicle stays like this, I've given the underside a generous coating of Dynax UC.
Mechanically, as you'd expect of quality automobile having only such a small mileage, the car is equally fantastic, and as I've said its probably one of the best W124's I've driven. The M104 straight six is a match made in heaven for the chassis of the W124, it's low down torque and super smooth power delivery perfectly compliments the W124's chassis dynamics and road manners. I've also just had the front timing cover oil seal replaced by my local Mercedes Specialists (Merc Spec, Skipton) as this is common source of leaks from the front of the engine, and the old one, in true M104 fashion, was seeping slightly. At the same time the engine wiring loom was inspected and found to be fine; it appears to already have been replaced (as the replacement looms have an extra connector, which this has), but obviously there's no formal record of this.
Finally, interior; what can I say; this is almost like new. It's in incredible condition and really is a nice place to be and reminds you how cheap the interiors of today's cars feel in comparison. As you'd expect everything works as it should.
So there you have it, I think this is probably one of the best, and lowest mileage W124 saloons available. If you can see past the limited service history, whose absence in this case has a totally valid explanation, then whoever gets this car is in for a real treat. The W124 was recently awarded Honest John's Best Classic award, and the best examples like this one will clearly demonstrate why it rightfully earned that award.
