Completed in 1986 for the Chamberlain Engineering Team, SE86C 002 is the second Group C car built by the hugely successful Spice Engineering team. The first SE86 chassis built (works car) went on to claim victory in the C2 class of the World Drivers Championship and win its class at Le Mans in 1987, paving the way for what would be a long and fruitful record in international sports prototype racing for Spice.
Unlike most of its rivals in the Group C2 Class, SE86 002 is not Cosworth powered, instead propelled by an 2-litre Hart four-cylinder turbocharged engine essentially the well-proven Hart 420R (418T) with a single Holset turbo. This makes it a unique car, and one with huge potential in terms of horsepower. With 600bhp easily achievable on conservative boost, there is absolutely no doubt that SE86 002 will be capable of running at the front of C2. Indeed, it will be capable of mixing it with many of the Group C1 cars as could be seen at Le Mans in 1988 when it qualified on pole in class, ahead of several works C1 cars. The combination of powerful engine and driveable chassis designed for customer teams will certainly make for a car that both Group C newcomer and seasoned historic racer can enjoy.
Eligible for Patrick Peters Group C series, SE86 002 will be welcome at all the major historic meetings, including Le Mans Classic. Having competed at Le Mans on three occasions between 1987 and 1989, the car will be very much at home at La Sarthe.
Wearing its 1988 Le Mans livery today, and having recently benefitted from new bag tanks and having covered almost zero miles since a full crack test, this extremely original Group C car is a fantastic route into what is fast becoming the most sought after class on the historic calendar.
