1937 The Little Car That Drove Around The World For Sale

In September 1971, this car left the UK and arrived in Australia in May 1972. Two years later it drove home through the Americas, making it one of the very few Austin Sevens to complete a drive around the world. Sir Herbert, as this car is known to the fans of the Miss Daisy books has been an old friend of mine for the last 10 years, but as I get older, I am unable to look after him as well as Miss Daisy, my 1934 Four seat tourer.

Before Sir Herbert was taken to Australia, he underwent several modifications. A second petrol tank was installed on the scuttle, allowing the car a 600 mile range between re-fuelling. The brakes were modified too, strengthening and lengthening of the levers and the installation of stronger cables, and the battery now resides under the passenger seat.

Sir Herbert was restored shortly after his return from Australia in 1972, While remaining sound and running, the car could benefit from some TLC again, TLC that I am no longer able to give it. He broke a crankshaft towards the end of a 1100 mile fundraising drive around the coast roads of Wales in 2015 and the engine was rebuilt. But he isn't driven much nowadays, just little trips around the block. But in the 10 years I have owned him, and apart from the crankshaft incident, he has never let me down.

Nevertheless, Sir Herbert is unique as a result of his history. Not many Sevens have driven around the world, but this one has and it comes with provenance of that trip, the drivers diary, over 250 photographs, carnets, visas, correspondence and newspaper cuttings from the time.

I part with Sir Herbert with a heavy heart, but I think the time has come for someone else to love him, preserve him, drive him and enjoy him.
