Porsche 356A Speedster, 1957, Porsche Centre Leeds For SaleAs the first serial production car to wear the Porsche name, the 356 was the car that set Porsche firmly in the direction of building high quality, cleverly engineered sports cars that could punch well above their weight on both road and circuit, even today that philosophy still remains at the heart of Porsche. True to the Porsche ethos the 356 was refined and revised over its 17-year production run without ever being fully redesigned. The 356 was offered in many different body configurations sourced through a variety of different coach builders including Coupé, Cabriolet and Speedster which we have here for you today. Perhaps the purest expression of the driver focussed 356 was the Speedster, first appearing in 1955 the speedster proved an instant success recognisable by its low wraparound windscreen, smaller retractable hood, lower door waistline and twin bucket seats, all of which served to emphasise a strong sporting image.
The speedster was the lightest of the 356s and coupling that with the 1.6 Litre 60bhp engine ensured a commensurate performance boost that meant over 100mph was possible. Allied to its already renowned handling characteristics meant the cars became an instant success on the American racing scene. The production run was relativity short running from 1955 to 1958 when the speedster was replaced by the heavier convertible 'D'. Today the speedster remains one of the most highly sought after variations of the 356.
This particular car we have here is a highly correct 1956 356A with coachwork by Reutter. Produced originally for the German market the car spent most of its life in Colorado before arriving in the UK in 1996. With the car was a comprehensive history from 1975-85 and one or two pieces dating back to 1966. Having lived in the dry state of Colorado the car was in very sound condition and after a year the decision was taken to fully restore the car to its original gloss black.
An official Porsche Body shop carried out a full restoration using all the original panels, to the highest possible standard. The bodywork is exceptionally straight and the bright work and exterior trim are of show quality. The stunning exterior is complemented by a highly correct interior. The seats have been upgraded to leather and the floor trimmed in the correct German square weave carpet topped with the correct mats. The restoration was very comprehensive with regular use a priority so while very much a show worthy car, no corners have been cut to ensure a very usable and fully sorted Speedster.
The car has had five owners from new and apart from the large service and history file is supplied with the owners manual, original jack and tool kit.
