PORSCHE 356 SPEEDSTER REPLICA SOLD (1968)
|This stunning Porsche 356 Speedster Replica was built by the renowned 'Vintage Speedsters' in Southern California in the late 1990's and was the subject of a major mechanical upgrade in 2003. |
The donor car was a 1968 VW Beetle which was converted in circa 1999 and the last American owner in San Francisco took the car in 2003 to Jake Raby - the very well known Engine specialist of Raby Aircooled Technology in Cleveland, Georgia to upgrade, as he wanted more power! http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/
The donor engine was a 2.0 Type 4 VW unit which was rebuilt from the ground up to his specifications and was bored out to 2687cc with nikasil cylinder liners, twin Weber 45 DCOE Carburettors, sports exhaust system and on a Dyno test it produced close to 230bhp!
The Engine cooling system fitted by them is known as a 'Down the Middle' system which has an improved fan with improved cooling veins inside and this system (patented by RAT) and there is a certificate in the file for this MassIVe DTM kit + an invoice for fitting in December 2003.
The cost of this work was almost $20K and the Raby engine and cooling system eclipsed the purchase price of the car itself. The Transmission was also rebuilt to match the power generated by the new engine and the car was rewired and the brakes upgraded plus a larger petrol tank was fitted and a fire extinguisher system was installed.
It was sold by the American owner in to an Englishman who was working in San Francisco in August 2007 and it was them imported to the UK and registered here. Since then it has only covered just over 1,000 miles and has not been used since 2012. We have just recommissioned the car and have given it a new MOT and just prepared it for sale.
The car is finished in Black with a Red stripe, Black leather seats piped in Red, Black Carpets, Black Mohair Soft Top with side screens, Black mohair Tonneau Cover, front Spot lights, Wood rimmed Steering Wheel and Steel Wheels with Chrome Hub Caps. It also has Porsche Carrera 2 badges and to the untrained eye, this car looks just like an original Speedster!
The car is in very good condition, although the paintwork is showing some micro blistering, but its looks in keeping with an old 356!
It really is fantastic fun to drive and would make a perfect car for touring this summer!
Car on display @ our showrooms in Mortlake.
