The Morris Minor van and pick-up were produced from 1953 until the end of Minor production in 1972 and differed from the saloon and traveller in having a separate chassis. They were initially marketed as the Morris quarter ton van but later some were badged as Austins and were very popular with small and large corporations including the GPO.

This vehicle is a 1970 Morris Minor van. It has been in the same ownership since 1994 with the previous owner since 1979 and has had just 4 owners from new.

In 1999 it was substantially re-furbished. The body was totally renovated and re-fitted to a new “Charles Ware” chassis and all of the brakes, suspension and steering were overhauled or replaced. It was then handed over to King Street Motors Minor specialists for a long list of work including the fitting of a 1275cc Marina engine and Toyota 5-speed gearbox and front disc brake conversion with brake servo, Marina uprights and wheels and (we understand) a saloon car diff was fitted. Various other upgrades include including electronic ignition, alternator conversion, two speed fan, two speed wipers, custom stainless exhaust, extra gauges, sports seats, CD radio with four speakers and tow bar with electrics and the load area is boarded and carpeted.

The underside is in A1 order and the cab is excellent and rust free with a shiny paint finish under the carpets. The back is a custom made fibreglass item although the rear doors are steel. The last owner used this van regularly and it has stood up very well since restoration - the paint finish is good with one or two minor flaws.

On the road this van is great fun to drive and unlike the standard van, which becomes thrashy and noisy above 55mph, can cruise at motorway speeds and stop when required.

In summary this is a unique “Moggy” van which would cost a huge amount of money to re-create. The invoice for the engine, gearbox conversion alone was £5k in and a rough estimate is that more than double this figure was spent on restoration and upgrades at 1999 prices.
