1940 Packard One-Ten Drop Head Coupe For Sale by Auction

"The first Packard was produced in late 1899. From the outset Packards were aimed at the luxury market and very quickly were perceived as status symbols, with a reputation for producing excellent automobiles which quickly assumed the same level of the grand classics such as Rolls-Royce and Cadillac. The most desirable Packard models were produced in the late 1920s and the 1930s, particularly the straight eights and open cars. With the Great Depression causing a steep decline in the sales of luxury cars, Packard turned to producing slightly less exotic and cheaper, yet still very well built vehicles. However, Packard was not recession proof and despite its demise being delayed by World War 2, Packard joined forces with Studebaker in 1952 before finally giving up the ghost in 1962.

The 1940-41 One-Ten Packard drop head coupe was a very interesting vehicle, featuring a straight six-cylinder side valve engine developing 100 bhp at 3, 200 rpm, with a single barrel down-draft Stromberg carburettor, coupled to a manual three-speed transmission.

This very rare and highly authentic 1940 example of the Packard One-Ten drop head coupe has had, it is believed, just four owners from new. A rare, original factory right hand drive car, it is one of just five brought to Australia in 1940 in knock-down kit form and assembled locally, a differentiating feature being the rear bench seat of the export car as opposed to the fold-up rear seats of the US model.

Still maintaining its authentic six-volt electrical system, this desirable convertible Packard finished in ivory with new ‘salt and pepper’ hood was professionally restored in the 1990s and has travelled just a few miles since.

This vehicle will be sold unregistered."

Estimate AUD$40, 000 - 45, 000
