CIRCA 1931 RACING NORTON FOR SPARES OR REBUILD For Sale

1931 Norton “TT Replica” ex Elwood Stillwell
I MAY BE WILLING TO BREAK THIS BIKE FOR PARTS IF THERE IS ENOUGH INTEREST. LET ME KNOW WHAT BITS YOU WOULD LIKE TO BUY. I HAVE ANOTHER PROJECT WITH A 1932 INTER RACE FRAME THAT I WAS GOING TO PUT A LONG STROKE MANX POST WAR DOHC ENGINE INTO BUT I ALSO HAVE A GENUINE GARDEN GATE DOHC MANX FRAME FOR THAT ENGINE. AS I ALREADY HAVE A SINGLE KNOCKER LONG STROKE MANX AND PREFER THE LOOK OF THE RIGID FRAME I HAVE BEEN RELUCTANT TO DO THAT. TOO MANY PROJECTS AND NOT ENOUGH TIME!

Thanks for your interest in my rare racing Norton. I purchased this bike circa 1995 form an old racer friend Bob McCoy of Windsor Ontario.

Bob raced Nortons and Rudges mainly in the 1930’s. His good friend Elwood Stillwell specialized in racing Nortons and in particular the one I now offer for sale here. Bob’s history of the bike states that it was raced in 1931 at Brooklands and the Isle of Man Grand Prix in 1930. In 1932 it was brought to Canada by Dennis Griffin. It was sold to Bert Frinke in 1932 who raced it at Savannah Georgia and other tracks in North America. In 1934 Elwood Stillwell acquired the bike, and raced it at many venues and according to the famous historian Dr. Harry Sucher and documented in his book “Inside American Motorcycling” it was Stillwell who was cheated out of victory at the inaugural 200 mile professional race at Jacksonville ( precursor to the Daytona 200). I have original pictures of Stillwell on this bike in the paddock and starting line at that race. This bike also competed at the notoriously dangerous Langhorne Pa. dirt tack where it lapped at over 84 mph and finished a respectable 9th on a 4 year old bike against then current factory racers from Indian. I also have a picture of Elwood on the bike with his racer friends from the Windsor/ Detroit area lined up in advance of the first running on the beach at the inaugural Daytona 200 in 1937.
According to Bob, Elwood campaigned this bike up into the 1960’s and even taught flat track techniques to young aspirants.
The bike has deviations from stock as you can well imagine having been raced so much and it does need some recommissioning . Call me for details. The correct rare “3 stay” frame is there and is straight and excellent.
The wheels and mudguards are not original although both are period correct.  The tank is “home made” welded steel by Elwood circa 1936 and can be clearly seen in the Daytona beach photo.
The engine, close ratio racing gearbox, racing magneto , racing clutch oil tank and bronze bodied correct TT Amal carb are all correct, original and in excellent condition. I have another lovely scalloped 1930's restored race also available to the buyer.
The bike was a good runner when I acquired it and has only been partially dismantalled for inspection. It will be reassembled for shipping. No cracks in the cylinder head, beautiful bore and good big end, excellent cam box , perfect "tunnel" never butchered, cams and followers, all important considerations. Special tools , some spares , original photos and steel flat track racing shoe included.
All told a great piece of history.
I have sold off 3 of my prized bikes in the last few years including a Norton Inter, a TT Rep Rudge and just recently a 1933 AJS ohc. Advancing age and changing priorities are dictating the selling off of my treasures.
Call me to discuss this or request more photos and info.
