At the beginning of the 1950s, Maserati was still producing cars on a very small scale. The Italian brand built high performance sports-cars which were a little too demanding for the wealthy clientele just starting to appear after the war. They were actually looking for models which kept the same allure and were very fast, but which had improved levels of comfort and security. The task of developing such a car was given to Giulio Alfieri, the brilliant engineer who joined Maserati in 1953. Four years later, the Maserati stand at the Geneva show displayed the stunning prototype of the 3500GT, with a body designed by Touring. In 1963, following the Sebring presented the year before, Maserati revealed the car that unequivocally replace the 3500GT: the Mistral elegantly designed by Frua. A curved rear window serving as a tailgate was cleverly and discreetly incorporated into the flowing shape of the car, an original concept at the time. It was initially only available with the 3500 engine but the enlarged 3700 became available as option from early, and towards the end of production a 4-litre version was also available. The Spyder is rare as only 125 cars were produced in total.

The example on offer was ordered on 5 April 1965 by Maserati's agent in Rome "Sport Auto Roma" who delivered in on April 12th to its first owner, SAS Radio Scialotti and its director Aldo Scialotta. The latter ordered a version fitted with the 3700cc engine. Our example was initially prepared to receive a 3500cc engine, but once Maserati received Scialotta's order it was fitted with the requested 3700cc engine and delivered 8 days after. Its first owner kept this Mistral Spyder for a number of years. Eventually it found its way to the US where it remained until it was repatriated to Italy. The second Italian owner was the famous Italian industrialist and collector Emilio Gnutti from Brescia who had it restored. This no expense spared restauration was finished in 2005. It is also one of only 11 cars ordered new from the factory with a hard-top. Delivered with the car, the hard-top is painted black as it was when it left the factory. The paint-work is in the original Argento Auteuil colour. It has a luggage kit made for the car and was ordered with a special handmade steering wheel. Complete with a Maserati Classiche Kit and an Italian ASI Targa Oro, this stunning Maserati Mistral Spyder is ready for Pebble Beach.
