Very fine Volvo 244 / 240GLT with 244 number plate For Sale (1989)
|This is a very well preserved Volvo 240 saloon. The condition is superb and it must have been loved and cared for all of its life. Descriptions often read, "good condition for year", but this car is in good condition for a two or three year old car. It is hard to believe that it is almost thirty years old.|
This car is in original unmolested condition with no modifications and as a result it starts, runs and stops exactly as it should.
It is the highest spec car of the 240 range and has the B230 fuel injected engine which developed 135bhp (the same as a Golf GTi 16 valve).
The colour combination of dark blue metallic and beige interior is the most aesthetically pleasing colour scheme and the buttoned leather elevates it above the drab cloth interiors of the lower specification models.
The trim level is superb, especially considering the age of the car, with all four power windows, power mirrors, power locks, power steering, heated seats, sun roof, comfort head rests in the front, see through head rests in the back, centre armrest in the back, centre rear floor down light, sprung bonnet opener, lumbar support, child locks on rear doors, rear window off/on, heated rear screen, original Volvo radio with four original Volvo speakers, fully carpeted boot, space for skis through rear armrest to boot. All lights are working, including dashboard lights, gear selector light etc.
There are also features that you dont get on a modern car, such as separate controls for left and right mirror, light under the bonnet, electric aerial, outside direct air vents for driver and front passenger (so that windows can be closed on hot days at motorway speeds without the need for air conditioning). It also has proper headlight wipers. I like that it has a collapsable steering column instead of an air bag, too.
The GLT specification includes higher BHP version of the famously reliable 2.3 litre Volvo 'redblock' engine, factory fitted stiffer springs and ant-roll bars, five five spoke alloys (yes, there are five of them), chrome trim delete, low profile tyres (relatively speaking), rev counter, etc.
I have had the car for a year and a half and it has been a very good every day car. It is very easy to drive, with record breakingly good turning circle, good visibility and enough power to launch itself into gaps in traffic and down motorway onramps. The engine is smooth and strong, the automatic four speed gearbox is very controllable, with a button to disengage the overdrive as well as the ability to shift through each gear in turn.
Driving this car is a joy, it is such a friendly looking car that it always gets let out from side roads and other drivers seem to go out of their way to give way to it. Compared to a modern car, it is narrow and fits through gaps on crowded streets or narrow country lanes. Older people come and say hello in petrol stations. People under 30 that were nt born in the 80s (and dont remember the staid image Volvo once had before they started winning races and sponsoring Twilight) genuinely think it is a very cool car. This car is equally at home at music festivals, at the beach with a surf board on the roof, or poshing it at the polo.
In fact the colour scheme and condition of this car mean that you will smile when you see it wherever it is parked. It looks its best surrounded by modern appliances in the supermarket carpark and its beauty is especially apparent when parked in the Volvo garage among all the new ones. This is very useable and very useful classic car. It is a car that will lift your spirits on a cloudy day and can also transport you and your loved ones any distance with utter reliability, in total comfort and safety.
Since buying this car I have had all work done at the main Volvo dealer and have replaced all service parts with genuine Volvo parts, including a full cam belt service, all HT leads, rotor and cap, battery, fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, headlight and windscreen wipers, exhaust etc. all at the main dealer. The cam belt was changed at the Volvo garage under 3000 miles ago. I have also replaced the headlight reflectors with new Volvo ones and the headlights are as bright as they were in 1988.
This car is in daily use and the mileage may be a little higher than 170000, but not much.
Before you call or view, here are the few points that make it a three year old condition, rather than a brand new car.
There is a tiny dent on the top of the right rear passenger door, visible when you catch it in the light.
The black trim under the windows has been touched up since leaving the factory. A professional body shop could make it look much better for very little money.
That was on my list to do, but it might not notice to a normal person. No-one has commented on it yet.
There are a few light surface scratches, only visible when looking very closely indeed. Nothing that would show up in a photo.
There is a small piece of plastic missing from the gear selector surround. Volvo have a replacement gear selector available in black, but I was waiting to source a beige one. You cant see it from the drivers seat anyway.
The radio and electric ariel do work, but the cassette deck does not.
The car came without the tow bar itself, although it has the attachments for one.
Other than that everything works as it should, the car is smooth, heated seats, windows, ariel, handbrake, central locking, etc all work fine and the car is remarkably tidy, the alloys are perfect and the paint is astonishingly good.
