genuine 1991 Defender 90 pathfinder LRPV+fully restored! For Sale

Motodrome are pleased to offer this very special 1991 example of the ever-popular Land Rover Defender 90 2. 5 D ex-military.
This is one of a batch of only 25 Defender 90s built for the Ministry Of Defence and handed over to Ricardo Consulting Engineers for modification as ‘air-dropped transport’ – few are thought to survive.
The idea was that two vehicles could be stacked together – one at 45° to the other – on a special pallet and dropped out of a Hercules transport plane (with parachutes attached, of course). The back corners of the rear wings were modified to be demountable, allowing the wheels of one to rest on the rear wheelboxes of the other and so take up less space. These vehicles became known as 'stackables' or 'piggyback 90's'.
Used initially by 5 Airborne Brigade, eight of these vehicles found their way to the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment (including this one) where they underwent further modification by the elite Pathfinder Platoon, to LRPV (long range patrol vehicle) standard. These were intended for a ‘more active’ military role and acquired various upgrades including storage baskets, ammo lockers, gun mounts, commander’s seat, Superwinch heavy duty winch and Southdown under-body protection.
However, it’s believed that these modifications were done unofficially and the vehicles were subsequently reconfigured to the more standardised FFR spec (it’s now 12 volt). The MOD would not normally release any details about this type of vehicle, but fortunately there is an article by official MOD photojournalist Bob Morrison, published in June 1995’s Land Rover Owner magazine, that does go into details, and shows at least 2 photos of this actual example on exercise. A copy of this is supplied with the vehicle also detailed military lifespan of the vehicle on military headed paper.
Since leaving active service in the Army in 2001 it is now more or less back how it was during its time with the Pathfinder platoon (less the GPMG’s and compass) . The previous owner has spent much time and effort in researching and restoring the 90 to its original Army specification, which meant thousand's of pounds worth of unobtainable parts being made bespoke to replicate the original 90 pathfinder thus making it look and feel like it was during it's active life. There are plenty of military Land Rovers out there but this is the real deal and has the paperwork and the ID plates to prove it.
It comes with a folder full of paperwork including old photographs of restoration and two copies of the original magazines it featured in. One being Land Rover Military Portfolio published by Brookland Books and containing a 5 page article including official Army photographs. The other is a Land Rover Owners International magazine published in June 1995 (during Army active service), this is a full colour spread containing the previously mentioned official Army photographs.
It comes with a Superwinch fitted to the front which was only fitted to one of a pair of patrol vehicles – whilst we haven’t test it, we’re assured it’s in full working order.
The pathfinder has an odometer reading of just 63, 000 kms and drives very well with everything working as it should, The chassis is rock solid with no signs of corrosion and it drives very well and would take you anywhere.
Obviously we have the windscreen, doors, and hood (all of which are in good order) should you prefer to return it to a more standard-looking example as per our photos of it configured as such.

We will be supplying it with a full 12 months MOT if sold in the UK

Post 1983 Land Rovers were very similar to the Series III Rovers. These vehicles included a full-length bonnet, revised grille, plus the fitting of wheel arch extensions to cover wider-track axles. While the engine and other body panels carried over from the Series III, they were mechanically modernized, including coil ...
