Triumph TR4A 1965 Project with Surrey Top For Sale

I recommend you get a coffee and sit comfortably before you read on :o)
You will be hard pushed to find a TR4 that has as little rust as this one, there is no structural rust anywhere on the tub, chassis or any panels, please study the photos, or better come along and see it for yourself.

Known History:

Imported into the UK from Colorado by the previous owner in 1990, sold to me in 2014.
The guy who imported the car sadly passed away before completing his pride and joy, he was a tractor engineer and he put that skill to work restoring the engine, gearbox, brakes, chassis and all things mechanical, but he didn't have the knowledge to do the tub, so stopped at that point.
I took on the tub; I decided to replace both right and left floor pans, also the sills, both inner and outer, both sides as although not that bad they were not as good as the rest of the tub, so as the tub was off the chassis it seemed sensible.
I am a total fuss so an embarrassing amount of time and effort was spent measuring and insuring the hole alignments (tub to chassis) where absolutely spot on. The tub was braced before work began (still attached) to insure no flexing or movement while each floor pan was separately cut out and replaced, one at a time to insure the integrity of the overall dimensions.
A section of the rear deck also needed replacing and I was very frustrated to discover the new part I bought was not to factory size, so again a daft amount of time measuring and trimming to insure the piece welded in exactly matched the piece removed.
I was this fussy as it was my intention to keep and use the car for myself, but like I do I took on other projects, and now I have run out of space and time, so I've decided the TR4 must go.

Component condition list:

Doors: Solid metal, not needing or had any welding, no damage
Bonnet: Solid metal, not needing or had any welding, no damage
Boot: Solid metal but not as good as the other panels, it has not been welded, but in my opinion it needs closer inspection around the outer seams
Windscreen frame: Solid metal, not needing or had any welding as far as I can see, no damage
Rear wings: Solid metal, not needing or had any welding, no damage
Front wings: Solid metal, not needing or had any welding as far as I can see, but the O/ S wing does appear to have had minor damage to the front somewhen in the past, now repaired
Surrey top: This consists of the rear screen and tin top but no rear glass. Overall condition is not perfect, but with a little work could be very tidy
Engine / Gearbox: I have not had the engine running but was told when I bought it that both the engine and gearbox had been completely refurbished and it was running back in 2008, so I would advise it will need commissioning, the engine turns over and there is oil in the cylinders to prevent seizure.
Fuel tank: Not tested, but appears to be good, as you'd expect though there is some surface rust, inside and out
Wheels: The 4 wire road wheels were re-chromed back in the 90s but now need chrome cleaner work to remove surface rust, tyres are good and have extra high pressure to prevent flat spots, but given their age please expect the need to replace them again. There is a wire spare with a tyre but it is painted not chromed, there are also 3 other painted wire wheels included in the sale, they are OK but far from perfect.

A few other pointers of items included in the sale:

Stainless steel exhaust (two rear pipes), front windscreen, side door glass included (no cracks / chips), hood frame (no cloth hood), front grill and valance (one perfect condition welded together, one OK and then there is the one on the car I was going to replace). I bought a brand new 'old stock' right hand drive wooden dash and matching steel back panel. The seats have been reupholstered at some point, but I would suggest they now need new foam.

General comments:

Most of the welding is complete apart from the front O/ S inner wheel arch, and as I say I was going to replace the front grill in total, personally I would also strengthen the inner wheel arches both sides. I would also revisit the steering column bracket, there is a new one included I was contemplating fitting to replace whats there now. The rear valance has a few dings (would mainly be behind the rear bumper) that need beating out, but then it's time to look at prep and painting. Oh I should mention that when I was taking pictures under the car I noticed an area on the rear of the chassis that needs a little patch welding.
The previous owner converted the steering to right hand drive and I carried this on with the welding when I replaced the floors etc.
It is very difficult to show everything when a car is as stripped back as this one, I have masses of photos of the overall condition of the main components of the car, please ask if you would like me to provide some of a particular part of the car. All you see in the photos on the listing is included, and there are other bits mainly nuts and bolts type stuff that although not photographed are included. I even have some old tatty photos of the chassis and engine taken by the previous owner at the time of him restoring them.
I have the 'Motor Vehicles Permanently Imported into the United Kingdom' certificate dated 25/ 09/ 90 stamped by HM Custom and Excise that will be included in the sale that interestingly shows the year of manufacture as 1968, while the Heritage certificate (included in the sale) shows the car as being built 31/ 05/ 65 (chassis numbers match), now I wonder if this means it didn't sell / get registered in the US for quite some time? anyway the point is all the necessary paper work needed to pass to the DVLA when the restoration is complete is included, and all taxes are paid.
The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust researched the records to show the car is a TR4A built 31/ 05/ 65 and despatched 04/ 06/ 65.
The Robson book indicates that TR4A cars with a Commission Number that starts with “CTC” have independent rear suspension, while those cars with a Commission Number that starts with “CT” (my car) have the straight axle, so my TR4A is NOT a independent rear suspension car.

It's difficult to say exactly what is missing as I didn't strip it (previous owner did that), but certainly all the major components are included, and sure some of the sundry parts that make the car up like carpets and door cards etc are missing and others may need refurb etc, I would say it is over 90% complete, and as I've said most of the major restoration work is complete so it shouldn't take the right person toooooo long to have this old girl up and working.

Most of you will know this, but when the car is ready for the road you'll need to get it MOT'd, then submit a completed V55 together with the import docs to the DVLA who will assign a date related number plate and post you the new V5C ready for you to insure it, sorted!

I know it is not always possible, but I would recommend you view before you buy for piece of mind, I'd like you to see the condition because it is not easy to show it that well in the photos, and I'm definitely not wishing to misslead anyone.
The car is sold in good faith with no guarantee given or implied, please do not bid / buy if you do not understand / agree with these terms.

Payment via bank transfer please, or I guess I would accept cash as the last resort, but no full payment via PayPal thanks.
And finally I would prefer collection within 5 days of the winning bid, unless you contact me and we agree to an extension.
You are going to need a flatbed for the rolling chassis, and a van to take the panels that are not attached to the car (all you see in the photos).

Please feel free to ask any questions

In response to a number of people asking about conversion to right hand drive;
It was a left hand drive car when it arrived back in the UK, the previous owner relocated the steering rack and cut holes above the pedal box to receive the clutch and brake cylinder etc for the right hand drive pedal box (included in the sale). I reformed the floor on what is now the passengers side after the removal of the pedals from the foot well. There is a hole cut on the right for the steering column and a steering column support bracket welded in, I'm not happy with the bracket I fitted, so I was going to remove it and weld in a purpose made / bought bracket which is included in the sale.
If I was keeping the car I personally would have welded shut any holes associated with the left hand drive fitment.

Thanks for looking, and if you read it all ... well done for staying awake :o)
