AUSTIN FX3 LONDON TAXI 1955 For Sale
|This vehicle was first sold to a London taxi driver on 13th October 1955. This chap ran the cab for 10 years - being the natural working life of the vehicle - until it expired in 1965. It was then sold and exported to the USA in 1967. From what I understand the new owner loved it but didn't want the diesel engine and converted it to the 2.2 BMC Gold Seal engine that would also have been available to this model in it's earlier production. He used the vehicle regularly and I believe he passed away and the vehicle was stored in a barn for around 18 years. The next owner bought it from the estate but did nothing to it apart from drive it around for a while and decided to sell it. I repatriated RYK back to the UK in November 2016. I paid all the duties and vat and asked the DVLA for the original registration number to be retuned to the vehicle which they very kindly did and I have the V5. It now lives just 10 miles away from it's original home. |
The cab has turned up and it's all there. No missing parts or handles. The Bakelite is all there and not cracked. It even has the original starting handle and boot key. I think it's missing a couple of door warning light lenses and that's it!!.
The cab has turned up and it's a bit like a snapshot of time. The cab came with it's original taxi meter, the last road tax which clearly reads Potters Bar (the area the cab lived in when bought new) and the last insurance certificate still on display (legal requirement even today) which expired in 1965 and the name on the certificate is the name on the sales ledger for 10 years previous, the correct fare chart and even period adverts on the tip up seats in the back! The original taxi meter works on time only. It isn't connected to the gearbox and I'll be honest, I've seen meters in better condition.
We have changed all the service items, with all new plugs, points, fan belt, HT leads, complete distributor, battery and radial tyres (apart from a good original cross-ply in the boot!) got all the electrics working apart from fog light, rebuilt wiper motor, refurbished dynamo, lots of small bits and pieces, bonnet webbing, windscreen rubber etc. The brakes were overhauled and once cleaned up and correctly calibrated (rod braking system) they work fine The condition of the vehicle I would describe as 7 / 10.
Everyone looks at these things differently. To me it's a perfect snapshot of time together with all the correct patina you would associate with a 62 year old commercial vehicle. The seats are worn, the floor mat is worn, the paint is tired and has split or crazed on at least 4 panels, could do with a new wing - but it's all there!!
BAD NEWS - Most of the electrics work but for safety it needs a complete loom fitted. These are available so it's not a biggie. There is an issue of fuel starvation which we think can be cured by replacing or refurbishing the tank, needs a new drivers seat, the body work is NOT A1 concourse and is not being sold as a concourse vehicle.
This is the third FX3 I have bought over the years. I love them but being a more rotund sort of chap I find they are not comfortable to drive so I have decided to let this one go too as I have other vehicles I enjoy more.
