Karmann manufactured the early 6-Series BMWs from launch in 1976 before BMW took production in-house. The most significant technological upgrade on the E24 range took place in 1982 whereafter all models were constructed upon the more advanced E28 chassis right through until production ceased in 1989. Supplied new by North Oxford Garages and first registered EWL 33Y on 1st March, 1983 to Pergamon Press, Headington Hill Hall, Oxfordshire, this righthand drive BMW 635CSi in white with electric seats in blue leather and electric sunroof was purchased for the personal use of Chairman Robert Maxwell and his wife, Elizabeth. The coupé resided at the listed building, the former politician and press baron's headquarters and home, which he leased from Oxford City Council for 32 years and famously described as being "the best council house in the country". In those heady days, the car was serviced by the Pergamon Press and BPCC workshop. After the demise of 'Captain Bob' in mysterious circumstances whilst cruising in the company yacht 'The Ghislaine', it emerged that his Mirror Group's debts vastly outweighed its assets and £440m was missing from the company's pension fund. As the Maxwells were married out of community of property however, the BMW was of no interest to those winding up the media empire. In any case, by this time, the car was residing at the family's chateaux in the French Department of the Lot et Garonne, where the car was re-registered in the maiden name of the widow, Dr Elizabeth Maynard, as 4148 SE47 on 16 August, 1994.
The vehicle was then garaged in the dry barn attached to the property and only ventured out on mainly local journeys. In March, 1995, a BMW dealer service record showed a 50,450 mileage which had only risen to 60,804 when submitted for the bi-annual Contrôle Technique report in March, 1995. Purchased directly from Dr. Maynard by a French-based owner on 25 November, 2006, the car was re-commissioned by a BMW service point in Villeneuve with all fluids changed and suspension bushes, brake linings and silencer renewed. More recently, servicing and maintenance has been carried out by the new BMW main dealer in Agen. The original UK registration has been reinstated on the car while the total mileage displayed, when photographed, was 72,505 which is believed to be genuine. The car certainly appears to be in excellent cosmetic order with original paintwork unmarked, interior extremely tidy and engine bay well presented. There is also a full complement of tools in the tray inside the boot-lid and a set of Continental headlamps for driving on the right in the boot together with a BMW service manual, a service history with book pack and original stamped owner's manual alongside, interestingly, a Maxwell Communications umbrella. Also to note the car has the rare and desirable bronze tinted windows and comes with its original sales brochure, spare key and a storm proof fitted cover.
