1982 Salamander Classic Trials Car (Class 8) SOLD

The Salamander has taken part in 11 MCC Classic Trials between 2010 and 2016 and has proven to be reliable and
competitive. From the 11 entries, 8 awards have been won. Five of these were in Class O, culminating in a Tri O
Award in 2011, and in Class 8, two Bronze Medals and one Gold have been awarded.

The Salamander has a tubular steel space frame chassis which houses a Peugeot 205 gti engine that gives ample
power and plenty of torque. The body and wings are in aluminium, and the car weighs a mere 720kg, which means
an impressive power to weight ratio and extremely lively performance.
The 205 gti sub-frame is mounted in the rear of the chassis, including the MacPherson struts which have been
modified to give ample clearance for 15 –inch rims and 185R15 tyres if chosen. The gti engine was professionally
rebuilt by Mark Shillaber at SRD and is naturally aspirated through twin 40 DCOE Weber Carburettors. The gearbox
is from a Peugeot 306 diesel, which has some very useful ratios, and a 3. 89:1 differential provides ideal gearing for
trialling and higher-speed cruising.
At the front, suspension is of the double wishbone type with Cortina uprights and adjustable SPAX shock
absorbers. 15” Rootes wheels are fitted with 155R15 tyres. The ride is supple and compliant.
Many features of the Salamander will be familiar to those who know the Peugeot 205 gti, including the leather
steering wheel and half-leather seats which are very supportive and incredibly comfortable. The removable roof
and side screens, along with an effective heater, mean that it is quickly adaptable to changing weather conditions.
When not being trialled, a large stainless steel locker takes the place of one of the spare wheels, which adds useful
extra storage, and the racks on either side can be used for mounting luggage.
In addition to Classic Trials, the Salamander has been taken on several long-distance touring holidays to
destinations including the Isle of Skye, Brittany and the South of France, as well as being used regularly for shorter
journeys as a practical run-around.
The car is correctly registered on the V5C as a Salamander, with a Sports body. Currently SORN’d , the Salamander
will be sold with a new MOT.
