PORSCHE 356 A CONVERTIBLE D For Sale (1959)
|Many purists see the Convertible D as the “Holy Grail” of the Porsche 356 production due to its very limited production numbers with just 1,330 produced between August 1958 and September 1959. The Convertible D was introduced as an interim step prior to the arrival of the new 356 B Roadster in 1960. This was due to a decline in sales of the by then four year old Porsche 356 Speedster. The new car offered buyers Speedster like styling but with the added practicality of wind up side windows, taller windscreen, Improved hood and more luxurious interior including new padded seats. The D was to be built on the Speedster chassis however due to Porsche’s preferred coachbuilder, Rutter struggling to keep up with the increased demand, Porsche sub-contracted cabriolet body construction to a number of different coachbuilders. Convertible D production was undertaken by Drauz of Heilbronn, hence the “D” suffix. New, and larger, teardrop rear lights and front and rear bumpers finished the improved exterior styling. Porsche described the new car in their sales literature as a “dynamic car of beautiful proportions. Extra light and low in design for competition and pleasure driving”. Power comes from a four cylinder 1582 cc air cooled, horizontally opposed, Type 616/1 engine with twin Solex carburettors, offering spritely performance with a 0-60 mph of 14 secs and a top speed in excess of 100 mph. Other notable specification highlights included; Four speed manual gearbox, Independent front suspension with torsion bars, trailing arms and tubular shock absorbers, Independent swing axle rear suspension with torsion bars, radius arms and tubular shock absorbers. Four large brake drums give the car its effective stopping capabilities. |
The Porsche 356 Convertible D offered here at Autostorico is Chassis No: 85875. This exquisite 356 is finished in its original Ruby Red with Tan leather interior.
