Porsche began experimenting with turbocharging technology on their racing cars during the late 1960s and, in 1972, began development on a turbocharged version of the 911. Porsche originally needed to produce the car in order to comply with homologation regulations and had intended on marketing it as a street legal racer like the 1973 Carrera 2.7 RS. Ernst Fuhrmann adapted the turbo-technology originally developed for the 917/30 CAN-AM car to the 3.0 litre flat-six from the Carrera RS 3.0, creating what Porsche internally dubbed as 930. The Turbo's characteristic flared wheel arches and 'tea tray' rear spoiler had already been seen on the Carrera model while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning and electric windows. For 1978, the Turbo's engine was enlarged to 3.3 litres, gaining an intercooler in the process; power increased to 300bhp and the top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 160mph. More refined than hitherto yet retaining its high performance edge, the Porsche 930 Turbo sold in the thousands, arguably becoming the definitive sports car of its age.
This excellent example of this iconic model is presented in its original and gleaming specification of Grand Prix White with Pearl Ocean Blue leather interior, which is confirmed on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. This lefthand drive example was originally delivered to Porsche Cars America where it remained until 1992 when it then returned to Europe. It still retains all the extras specified from the factory when built which include Blaupunkt Reno radio, locking differential, sports seats with electrical height adjustment, forged alloy wheels and sunroof. This fabulous Porsche Turbo, powered by the later and exhilarating 3.3 litre turbo engine, also comes with the all important service book and manual, original Porsche tyre compressor and full tool roll. This truly is a stunning example and is as hair-raising to drive today as it was in the 1980s.
