|1989 Mercedes-Benz 300E|
My own daily driver for the past several years. This is the comparatively rare First Series W124 saloon, without Sacco panels and with grey bumpers. What is particularly unusual about this car is that it has the 3-litre petrol injected six-cylinder with a five-speed manual gearbox.
Supplied new by Lancaster Ipswich, it was first registered on 19th October 1989. It started life as a regular 300E Auto, equipped with leather, electric driver’s seat, alloys and headlamp wash/wipe. I acquired the car in 2012 with 150k miles on the clock as an original unmolested car – the car is still 95% original paint today.
Converted to manual gearbox in 2015 using a complete engine and five-speed removed from one of the very rare factory 300E manuals, also from 1989 and pre-facelift. The
conversion was carried out using all MB parts including pedal box, 300E manual propshaft, new gearbox crossmember and gear-shift linkage, and it was all ‘bolt in’, no cutting or fabricating.
The differential ratio has been changed from 3.07:1 to 3.46:1 too as the original ratio was far too tall. The speedometer has been changed to the correct unit that matches the differential so it reads accurately, though that has meant the mileage displayed is incorrect (showing 249k miles).
Over the last few years the following work has been carried out.
- New jacking points (properly let in using new panels)
- Rear subframe removed, blasted and powder coated
- While the subframe was removed the underside was Dinitrol protected
- All new OE rear suspension arms
- New rear wheel bearings
- New lower hub carrier bushes
- New diff seals
- Solid (Delrin) rear diff mounts
- Sportline rear subframe bushes
- Polyurethane front subframe bushes
- New Sachs dampers all round
- New propshaft flex discs
- New engine mounts
- New gearbox mount
- New diff and gearbox oil
- New gear shift linkage bushes
- Brass bushes fitted to the gear shift mechanism
- New alternator
- New water pump
- New upper timing cover oil seal
- New exhaust system
- New front lower ball joints
- New rear brake pipes
- New distributor cap and rotor arm (Bosch)
- New discs and pads at rear, pads at the front
- New boot rubber
The car is 100% solid - in excellent condition underneath and well protected. The engine runs well with good oil pressure and has just been serviced.
The car has all its original books/manuals and a full service history. HPI clear.
Given that it has been a daily car in its 28th year it is not perfect. The original paint has some marks and blemishes and the front wings are starting to go in the usual place. The interior is generally very nice with original ribbed overmats, nice leather and period Blaupunkt stereo. The driver’s seat has some wear to the bolster, but, being proper leather, it has a nice feel to it.
The original 15-hole alloys are on the car now. I had a refurbished set of period correct 7.5x16 AMG Aeros on the car and these are available separately.
The reason for sale is that I want to spend more time and get on with my W126 project. The car is very reliable – I have done a lot of miles in it – so would suit someone who wants a car that they can get on and use, improve and enjoy. I’ll be sad to see it go.
