Wolseley Viper rolling chassis For Sale (1930)
Wolseley Viper Rolling Chassis. For sale as I have just too many other car projects. The chassis is in great condition. I bought it about 10 years ago from a chap near Weybridge and have kept it undercover ever since. Some light surface corrosion but no rust or rot to speak of at all, it would come up a treat if shot blasted. The auction is for the following parts as pictured: Chassis (incl. springs & petrol tank) Rear Axle Front Axle Steering Column Radiator A box with a few small chassis fittings that came with the car. Now this is a big chassis. If you know wolseley hornet specials and the like, think twice the size (and weight!). The wheelbase is 9 foot 9 inches, track 4 foot 8 inches. Overall the chassis is 13ft long. It was a high quality car with 12 in hydraulic brakes in 1930. I bought the radiator at Beaulieu autojumble some years ago. I think it is from a slightly earlier wolseley (around 1927?), but it really suits the chassis. The radiator too, is imposing. Its 35 inches high overall and 21 inches wide. The core looks in great condition, I filled it with water today and there are some small leaks, but they are very small and even I could repair them. I have a sales handbook for the viper from September 1930. The sales handbook shows a picture of the chassis and the body styles available (see pics). Sadly I did not get a V5 or any registration documents with the car. I have also never been able to find a chassis number on it. The front axle is stamped 1734 / HEA but this didn't seem to match any records of the wolseley club. The only other numbers we have found, is one of the shock absorbers date stamped June 1930. Before anyone gets really excited, this is not the chassis from the WW1 Brooklands racer which was know as The Wolseley Viper. However if you do have a spare hispano V8 aero engine lying around it would make an exciting special! |
