One of the many Downside bicentenary events is a Concours d’Elégance on the
sports fields of Downside School in Somerset on Sunday 4th
Vintage and classic cars will be grouped into three classes:
Pre-war – 1945-1967 – 1968-1984
There will be a 1934 Aston Martin Ulster Le Mans, a 1928 Bugatti Grand Prix Type
37A, a 1929 Rolls Royce Phantom 11, a 1955 Jaguar XK 140, 1961 Aston Martin
DB4 and 1965 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider. We will also have Giles Cardozo with his
flying car. That’s just a taster of over 20 fabulous cars already confirmed.
One of the highlights and relevant to the venue are two Squire cars, a 1937 Squire
1500 and 1935 Squire Ranalagh Tourer. The designer, Adrian Squire, was a pupil at
Downside in the 1920s and designed his first car when he was still at school.
This will not only be a fun and interesting vintage and classic occasion but is also a
major event for Downside’s bicentenary celebrations. The Benedictine Community
arrived in Stratton-on-the-Fosse in 1814 and set to work building the Downside that
exists today. One of their major achievements was the Abbey Church completed in
1938 and now in need of some major restoration. Proceeds from this event will go
towards the Abbey Restoration Project, to help preserve this great masterpiece of
the Gothic Revival for many future generations.
Tickets for visitors are £5 each, family ticket £10. Book early as numbers are limited.
