BACKGROUND

The MG TD was the fourth generation of MG’s series of midget T models and had some considerable changes for the better over previous versions.
The TD was 5” longer and 4” wider than the TC with new bumpers front and rear, but it was the handling that saw the greatest improvements with independent front suspension with coil springs, rack and pinion steering, a much stiffer chassis and 15” disk wheels. The 1,250cc overhead valve engine pushed the car to a top speed of around 80 mph, which for 1950, was plenty.

HISTORY

This MG TD was first registered in the USA, one of the 23,000 or so that were sold to the Americans in the 50's. It spent most of its life in the dry state of Texas so the owners advises that there are no rust issues with the car.

In the US, back in the early 1990’s it was subject to a complete rebuild by a MG specialist. The engine was completely overhauled and rebuilt with a lead free head, with the gearbox, clutch, and brakes all being renovated and rebuilt too. Much of the chrome was replaced at this time using new 'old stock' to keep the car as original as possible. It is presumed that during the extensive restoration the speedometer was either replaced or set to zero.

After the restoration the car was kept in dry storage and hardly used for the next 10 years until being purchased by the current owner in 2012, importing it to the Isle of Man. During his ownership it has made many touring trips around Ireland, the UK and Italy enjoying an enthusiastic reception everywhere it went.

The car has caused no issues in this time but the starter motor and petrol pump have been replaced as advised, with the charging system also being updated by dynamo with new electronic charge control fitted.

The hood was also replaced with a Double Duck canvas top in black with matching tonneau cover and side screens. New tyres (165-80-15 radials ) have been recently fitted and a new cherry red interior with a lovely custom made teak dashboard  finishes off this lovely example perfectly.

PAPERWORK

There is sadly no documentation relating to its history in the US and being registered on the Isle of Man there is no requirement for an MOT.

The Isle of Man registration document shows the one current owner and the car comes with one key and copies of the original owner’s handbook, together with several original parts and spares. All the importation paperwork is also present.

INTERIOR

The quite spectacular Cherry Red interior and plush seats are still in fantastic condition and the lovely white dials and instruments look perfect and very much the part in the outstanding wooden teak dashboard.

The seats, carpets and door cards are all immaculate, as are all the chrome fittings. With the hood up or down, it feels like a very special place to be indeed.

EXTERIOR

Other than an unfortunate mark caused by the passenger door banging on the paintwork before the doorstop was adjusted correctly and a couple of stone chips, the Old English White paintwork is in very good overall condition and looks deep and glossy.

All the chrome is bright and shiny and shows no sign of any pitting or discolouration with everything looking in very fine condition. All the rubber seals, lights and bumpers are in fine condition, and the shut lines are as good as they get.

The recently replaced top quality hood fits snugly and has no sign of any wear at all. The wheels look near-perfect with no signs of any kerbing, and all have had recent tires.

The car is also being sold with the leather suitcase and picnic basket included.

MECHANICS

With such low mileage and usage the car has had regular oil changes and basic maintenance carried out as required and the owner reports that it drives and sounds as good as it looks.

The engine starts well and the car drives superbly with all systems and electrics functioning correctly.

THE APPEAL

This MG TD looks fantastic in Old English White with black hood and cherry red interior and really epitomises classic British sports cars from the 50’s.

With the chromed touring rack and supplied leather suitcase this car is ready to take you on a great adventure across Europe or would be perfect to take to those classic club meetings and shows.

It’s rare to find a MG TD in such great condition and shape that offers turnkey motoring like this one, that even at seventy years old looks a long way from retirement.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
