The Background

The Triumph TR4 was in production between 1961 and 1967. As with all of the most stylish sports cars of the era, the TR4 was designed by an Italian, Giovanni Michelotti and was based on the chassis of the previous TR3A.
The TR4 improved upon its predecessor in a number of areas, passenger comfort was much improved due to wind-up windows, face level ventilation and an additional hard top. The 2138cc engine that ended in the latter of the TR3A cars continued whilst a 1991cc was also made available for those wanting to participate in 2 litre racing in their TR4. If your TR4 had the optional overdrive fitted it was good for a top speed of almost 110mph which in its time wasn’t to be sniffed at.
Fast forward to today and the Triumph TR4 is still a great handling two-seater sports car that is one of the most popular post war era classics to own. Parts are still available from a number of sources due to a multitude of components being shared between a number of models, which is a great plus point with a classic.

The History

This particular TR4 is a 1963 model (two years into production) with a red and black interior. It has spent nearly 4 years with its current owner and has a pretty comprehensive paperwork file to back up its history showing that it's been looked after.
It has enjoyed many outings on runs with the owner’s club, has attended Goodwood Revival and even toured Europe visiting Holland. It is always garaged when not in use.

The Paperwork

There is a comprehensive file of paperwork with the vehicle including a manual and logbook. Key receipts are present for the car's bodywork restoration and full engine rebuild in 2011 and also receipts for the recent overdrive and gearbox rebuild in Sept 2020. Servicing and maintenance paperwork is also present in a ring binder full of history.

The Interior

The interior is in good condition and the seats show no wear. There is some aftermarket wiring to the lower dash but all in all it's tidy. The steering wheel and gauges are particularly beautiful on this model, showing just what you get what you let an Italian do the styling. Lovely.
The owner is keen to point out that a new speedometer was placed in the vehicle, showing to have 6,000 miles. The actual mileage is around 31,000, as per the MOT.

The Exterior

The exterior is clean with no damage to speak of. The car looks stunning in red with the black fold away roof and is also supplied with the additional Tonneau cover. The roof seals around the windows could do with some adjustment. The brightwork is in very good condition. The car is running the 4 original steel wheels with hubcaps and the tyres have good tread. As you will see from the images, the bodywork is straight and true and looks just as well in the pictures as it does in real life, as already stated it did have a bodywork restoration in 2011.

The Mechanics

The car sounds great and has that British Sports car rasp to its exhaust note. It starts/stops and runs as it should with no unusual smoke or worrying noises. There is paperwork for the necessary servicing and mechanical care. It has had an oil leak at some point in the past which has now been rectified by the current owner. The engine bay is complete and could do with a little tidying but is very original.
The car benefits from a full engine overhaul carried out in 2011 by Paul Inch Engine Services limited, this included replacement of key items but not limited to pistons, main bearings, timing chain, head gasket and valve guides. Full paperwork is included to prove this.
The gearbox and overdrive were also recently removed and overhauled in September 2020.

The Appeal

The Triumph TR4 follows the well proven two-seater sports car recipe of revvy throaty engine at the front, power sent to the back (RWD) and two comfy seats in the middle. All of which is packaged neatly in some pretty bodywork designed by a stylish Italian. There are a number of two seater sports cars of this era to choose from , however, this particular vehicle has had the main elements of concern, when owning a classic, lovingly restored (bodywork and mechanical) and as a result has many years ahead of her whether that should be cruising those B Road twisties to a nice country pub for lunch on a Sunday afternoon or even pulling up to a classic car meet and drawing much deserved attention.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
