1967 Triumph Trophy TR6

HIGHLIGHTS

• Concours winning motorcycle
• Beautifully restored
• Highly original specification
• Very low mileage

THE BACKGROUND

From the late 1940’s Triumph designed and built bikes for ‘the people’. As more and more working people aspired to owning their own motor transport rather than relying on public transport or their bicycle!, Triumph offered appealing motorcycles such as the 200cc Tiger Cub - a 1960 Tiger Cub being the current owner’s first bike!.

Made from 1956-1973 in the Triumph factory in Meriden, the TR6 went through several development changes and reincarnations during it’s lifespan. The single carb TR6SC Trophy Special, with a straight through exhaust and alloy mudguards, for instance, was a big hit in the US with desert racing and trials competitors. Steve McQueen, as we know, famously rode a TR6 in the 1963 film The Great Escape.

The 650 engine is a good compromise between the Bonneville and 6T Thunderbird which was phased out in 1966. Just 262 TR6 machines were built during 1967.

THE HISTORY

This late 1967 TR6 was restored by Graham Bowens in the early 1990’s to a show winning standard using as many original parts as possible (as featured in ‘Classic Bike’, January ’96).
It was thereafter Best in Show at Stafford, Ipswich and Northern rallies and having covered just 1,721 miles, it was purchased by a museum in 2007 and subsequently unused.
The current owner purchased this stunning bike at auction on the 19th April 2016 and has enjoyed maintaining it and riding it. With approximately only 3,127 miles on the restored engine now, it continues to be a show winner, for instance, winning ‘Bike Night’ at the Poole Quay event a few years ago.
The current owner also owns several historic and modern trials bikes and enjoys competing around the country and in 2019 he rode the TR6 on the Moidart Run, Scotland. The bike performed faultlessly.

THE PAPERWORK

This gorgeous matching numbers Triumph comes with a comprehensive folder of paperwork which includes the up to date V5C, some old MOT’s going back to 1984, and some old tax discs.

Also present is an owners handbook, auction catalogue, parts catalogues, various receipts and a copy of the ‘Classic bike’ magazine feature.

THE CONDITION

The condition of this concours winning machine speaks for itself. The original Mist Green and Alaskan white paintwork is in good condition and was unique to the ’67 model. The stove enamelled black frame, etc. also looks great. Being picky there are some small chips to the trailing edges of the mudguards but the chrome has a deep shine and appears scratch free.
All the ancillaries and alloy parts are very clean and the current owner informs us that the lights,
horn, speedo, tacho and Ammeter function correctly as they should and the bike has been kept in a de-humidified shed for the last six years.

THE MECHANICS

Now with only 3,127 miles showing since the rebuild by the previous owner, this standard 649cc engine kicks into life easily with the single Amal carburettor. With a strong 9:1 compression ratio and 43bhp (@6,500rpm) on tap, it reportedly has good low down torque and impressive acceleration. The quarter mile is achievable in 15 seconds (in theory) with a top speed of around 88mph. Many of the original Triumph parts for the rebuild were purchased from JA Hitchcock & Son, Kent.
The engine also retains the original coil ignition and the carburettor has had a new ‘stay up’ float fitted recently. The owner also informs us that the 4-speed gearbox (with the Triumph gear shift pattern of one down, three up) was mated to a new alloy clutch pressure plate in 2007 and that there are (unusually) no visible oil leaks.
The riding position is said to be comfortable with the rubber mounted upswept handlebars,
and in this case, stiffer sidecar springs in the front forks. The front brake has a full width 8 inch hub which contains floating brake shoes and the 7 inch rear sits in a quickly removable hub. The Speedmaster front tyres and Avon Supreme rears are older but have plenty of tread.

THE APPEAL

It’s hard to find a truly original specification 54 year old bike these days and certainly one that has obviously been so meticulously restored as this one. It is also obvious that the current owner knows his bikes and has also cared for it to keep it looking this good.
The quintessentially British Triumph Trophy TR6 is a well balanced, well proportioned motorcycle and arguably one of the best high performance bike’s of it’s generation. The owner assures us that this Triumph goes as well as it looks, and with so few miles on the clock, ought to be a good investment and should provide hours of classic British bike riding enjoyment.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
