The Background 


The Escort was a huge step on from the popular Anglia. Introduced in 1967 the mk1 was in production until 1975. Although modern and sharp looking it followed the tried and tested Ford formula of front engine, rear wheel drive and leaf springs in the back. 

There was a model for every occasion, and the 1300 GT used a tuned Crossflow engine with a Webber carburettor and uprated suspension, with an interior taking parts from the luxury and sports parts bins for wood trim and extra dials.

The History 


Starting its life in Australia, this Mk1 Escort was imported to Ireland in 2006, the antipodean climate is kind to metal if not paint so it was resprayed 3 years ago in the original Sebring Red.

This was a full bare metal restoration, done by the owner with the assistance of a friend who works in a bodyshop, so there are no receipts for the work, but it is clear to see the paint is new and very good and the car has many new parts.

The Interior


The original interior has been refitted and is in great condition - the black vinyl isn’t worn, there are no splits and the stuffing looks full. 

The matching door cards are also in excellent shape and being a GT there are wood veneer inserts in the door tops, rear quarters and dashboard which looks good and the chrome trim around the edges has just a few marks. 

The three spoke sports steering wheel has just a couple of dull areas on the shiny rim and the leatherette centre pad looks good, as does the dash top pad.

The interior of the cabin was also repainted and the exposed body colour areas look new and fresh, as does the crisp paint in the door shuts and the carpet looks new, a look continued in the boot, where the remote battery is located in a box with a cut off switch.

The Exterior


Having had a full bare metal respray the paint is excellent, with only a couple of small marks showing around the car, 2 small chips on the bottom edge of the drivers door for example.

Much of the trim is original, so the bumpers, overriders and other parts such as lights and grill have a light patina of age but are in very good.

The two tone 13” RS 4 spoke alloys are perfect and the tyres barely worn

Mechanics


The engine bay looks clean enough to eat from, the new paint shows how good the inner wings and bulkhead are, and the engine appears dry of leaks from the oil or water.

Looking under the car the floor looks solid and maybe better than new. It has been undersealed over the body colour protecting it from future corrosion, and many of the hard and flexible brake pipes have been renewed with fresh items, there is a new exhaust running under the car and new shock absorbers from Gaz, one of the best quality aftermarket makers around, fitted to the car.

The appeal


The Mk1 Escort is one of the most popular classics you can buy, and in GT form adds even more appeal being a sporting Ford with the right wheels and interior, and the perfect colour for a car to be seen in. 

This Ford has been treated to a full bare metal repaint so looks incredible and is rust proofed underneath, it's all you could want in a rear wheel drive Ford.
