The Background

Created during an era when a genuinely sporting car was well within the grasp of the average joe, the Alfa Romeo Junior GT was an entry-level model to encourage buyers to submerge themselves in the brand's glorious heritage without diluting the appearance, zeal and sheer exuberance of the famed 105 chassis. Originally rolled out in 1966, the plucky little 1.3-litre looked and behaved as purposeful as its more powerful siblings. It seems a genuine tragedy that the market for small pretty little coupes no longer exits, as the marketing men decide what we should drive today. However, if you're looking for a back to basics pert little coupe, with a raw driving experience with the sensations of a grounded rollercoaster then all is not lost.
This car spent its first 40 or so years in its native Italy and then brought over to Ireland via the UK in 2014. This 1972 car is one of the last versions of the Juinor GT to be built and shows evidence of a ground-up restoration. Furthermore, it has been subjected to a recent spruce up with new paint, cosmetics and additional maintenance to help keep the car on top of its game. The result is a delightfully clean and very solid example with a beautifully presented engine and interior. It comes with a fascinating binder of paperwork, which documents its early life and later expenditure. It simply needs to be registered for use and ready to let rip.

The History

Unusually for a car that has been imported across several countries, it has retained much of its original paperwork. While in Italy, the restored car had last been registered in Matera and finally in Modena and then shipped over to the UK in 2014. It underwent an MOT and was then dispatched to a private collection in Southern Ireland. The history files contain some pleasing details to add to the array of invoices, history and collected cuttings. Recent work includes new carpets, new rubber seals throughout the car, new ignition parts and a full respray in its original blue. The current owner is a trader, who bought the car via an auction and has placed it up for sale. As delightful it is to drive, he tends to specialise in large high spec luxury coupes.

The Paperwork

A binder full of it Italian documents comes with the car, with some useful translation notes. It also has a sizable number of Irish documents and invoices to support the additional work the car has seen in the last 7 years. This covers suspension work and gearbox mounts by an Alfa Romeo specialist, as well as new door hinges, seals, carpet and sound deadening set, battery with a switch and documentation to cover the respray.

The car has also seen attention to the wiring, HT leads and distributor parts. It comes with two keys and the car will need to be registered for the UK roads, but its LHD status means that it may well also appeal to overseas buyers.

As the vehicle has all of the correct import documentation including NOVA certificate, it will be no problem registering the car in the UK and being its first UK owner! Equally,  the vehicle retains its Italian papers making it cheap and easy to re-register in the EU.

The Interior

The interior really is simplicity at its very best, and this is complemented by its near-perfect condition. The door cards are excellent and show no signs of wear, with the seats also showing no problems in regards to their condition. The carpets are recent items, so there are no issues to be mentioned. The dashboard is in excellent condition, with the facia and top of the unit in a damage-free state with just a little wear around the binnacle. The veneer dashboard detail finish is good, complemented by a near-new aftermarket Nardi steering wheel. The original can be sourced if needed. The dials and controls are all good, with no significant signs of ageing. The gear knob shows a bit of life, but the leather gaiter is as new. The headlining has discoloured a little through age but is rip free.

The boot is good with the carpet in excellent condition.

The Exterior

The car has been subject to a professional restoration at some point in its life, and therefore the presentation and condition of the car are positive. The structure is solid, with no notable issues that will need immediate attention. Externally, the panel work is all very solid with no significant evidence of corrosion noted on the panels, with the chassis legs, inner wings, doors, front valance, sills, engine and boot bays looking good. The doors open and close, with a little obstruction probably due to the new rubbers, the driver's door requires a ‘knack’ to open and may benefit from a minor adjustment. The body is beautifully presented with no dents or scuffs. The blue olandese paintwork has been carried out to a high standard, with no significant evidence of runs or overspray or poor masking. The boot lid, however, shows signs of a paint blemish, likely to be something that happened during storage or transit prior to the car being delivered to the current seller.
The chrome bumpers are possibly the only thing that lets the exterior presentation down a little, as they appear to be a little flat with the odd minor dent. That said, they’re free from corrosion or pitting and could be ideal candidates for specialist treatment. The window chrome is better, with the wing badges perhaps being in need of a little love too. The glass is good, with no damage although the near side quarter light glass is loose but is being sorted out by the seller. All of the glass rubber can be described as being in very good condition. The wheels are correct for the model, and are in excellent order throughout, with the Debica tyres all being around 10 years old and in legal condition with lots of life in front of them. There are no issues with the lights, all functional and in good condition. The front headlamps are UK spec and would not need changing for their MOT.

The Mechanics

The parts and specialist availability is excellent, so naturally, the mechanical elements have been well catered for. As a result, the presentation of the engine will give any prospective buyer confidence that the mechanical aspect of the car has matched the care and duty of the exterior condition. Many of the ancillary and wiring components look like they have been recently fitted or renewed. It starts up with no hesitation, the delightful 1.3-litre twin cam roaring into action with no notable defects to its running, the exhausts throaty growl and lack of smoke after start-up suggest it is in good health. There are no signs of leaks. The brake components look like they have also seen recent attention and are said to bite well, with no reported issues with the steering or suspension.

The Appeal

Alfa Romeo's have something of a poisoned chalice having gained a reputation of having to fend off the woes of rust. Of course, this is true with any classic car, so if that issue was largely resolved, what are you left with? A compact, stylish, eager and rewarding little car.  Alfa’s appeal to the heart and the beautifully balanced GT Junior is no exception. Driving it offers an optimistic joy with plenty of frivolities, so all that remains is for the new owner to seek out an open road with a sequence of bends to put this delightful car to good use.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
