The Background
Based largely upon its Series 2 predecessor which sold in its droves, the Land Rover Series 3 was somewhat of a significant ‘facelift’ as opposed to an entirely new vehicle, with the majority of its notable changes being superficial, such as a new front end design, redesigned interior and the offer of a fresh air heater for those looking for a little more comfort in the winter.
Mechanically, the Series 3 built upon the now-legendary performance and reliability of the Series 2, and also saw the introduction of the 3.5-litre V8 engine to the range for the first time, which was - in essence - a de-tuned version of the same engine fitted to the Range Rover Classic, producing 91bhp but plentiful torque, which made it a firm favourite for those that liked to explore off the beaten track in their Land Rover.
The History
Purchased by the vendor in May 2017 as the fifth enthusiast owner, this Series 3 was given an extensive overhaul and restoration by Malta’s leading Land Rover dealer whilst in the care of the previous owner, with the intention of gifting the car to the founder of the company.
Unfortunately, due to the owner getting older and struggling with the lack of creature comforts and power steering, the car was never used as intended and spent a lot of time sat idle.
Thankfully, however, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it meant our vendor passed the car on an almost daily basis, eventually deciding to inspect it thoroughly and leave their contact details on the vehicle. The rest, as they say, is history, and this gorgeous Series 3 has been with them ever since.
Having gone through such an extensive restoration at the hands of the previous owner, the vehicle has been stored garaged by our vendor, who has used the car sparingly and only accrued around 4,000 miles on the odometer during their time with the vehicle, having purchased the car on 70,176 miles and with the odometer currently showing 74,486.
During their time with the vehicle, the current owner has also carried out the following maintenance in order to keep this classic Series Land Rover in tip-top condition:
- Regular oil changes
- Coolant flush, new brake fluid
- Gearbox and transfer box oil change
- Differential oil change
- Greasing and lubrication as and where required
As a result, despite its minimal use, this Land Rover Series 3 remains in excellent shape, and is ready for the next owner to use and enjoy.
If that wasn’t enough, the sale also includes the original tailgate, the single cab (the vehicle is currently fitted with a double-cab, but the single variant is included and is in pristine condition, we are told) and two original foldable footsteps.
The Paperwork
Included with this ‘Landie’ is the current logbook, previous owner’s log book, VRT certificate and - most importantly - the Transport Malta Authorised Vintage Car Certification.
The Interior
Whilst never famed for its creature comforts, no-one can deny the utilitarian nature of the Series 3’s interior suited the car well, and this example has seemingly been kept in top condition.
The front seats, for example, remain taut and free of damage, whilst in the rear the load bay is in excellent condition with no notable damage and certainly nowhere near the usual level of wear-and-tear seen on these vehicles, likely due to the aforementioned restoration.
Up above, the roof is in excellent condition, whilst all systems are reported to be working as they should be, not that there’s exactly much to go wrong with a Series Land Rover.
The Exterior
As with the interior, the bodywork and paint on this Series 3 are in outstanding condition throughout, having received plenty of attention in recent years following the restoration work taking place.
From what we can see, the paintwork is impressively free of any major chips, marks or typical wear often seen on a car of this age, with the only notable marks being a superficial mark on the offside door, along with some damage on the nearside rear quarter corner.
All four wheels are in pristine condition with no kerb damage, and we can see no other damage to areas such as the light lenses, bottom edges of the door or bumpers, with even areas such as underneath the wheel arches being in outstanding condition - wonderful stuff!
The Mechanicals
Just as with the aesthetic condition of the vehicle, this Series 3 is also in excellent mechanical condition, with our vendor reporting no faults or issues encountered during their 4,000 miles of enjoyment.
Naturally, for a Land Rover of this era, there is a slight oil leak, though this is the extent of any known issues. Our vendor is quick to point out that the emissions are clean with no heavy black or blue smoke, no electrical issues and no problems with the engine whatsoever.
Underneath, the chassis is reported to be in excellent condition, with the same being true of the bulkhead, meaning this Land Rover has had some serious work carried out during the restoration project, and is ready for the next owner to simply enjoy as they see fit without needing to spend time addressing difficult or costly corrosion-related issues that so often befall these wonderful vehicles.
The Appeal
A true icon of the motoring world, it is no wonder the Series Land Rover’s are still a firm favourite with enthusiasts and classic car drivers to this day, as they are surely one of, if not THE, most iconic classic off-road vehicles ever produced.
This 1976-registered Series 3 example is in outstanding condition throughout and has clearly been restored by an enthusiast with an eye for detail and accuracy, and as a result our vendor has simply had to cherish the car and carry out only the lightest scheduled maintenance.
Ready to use and enjoy in whatever way you see fit, and with a plethora of additional parts included in the sale, this is an opportunity not to be missed by anyone looking for a Series 3 to add to their collection - simply stunning!
