First launched in 1968, the W114 and W115 Series known as “The Stroke 8” definitely deserves a spot as one of the most iconic Mercedes of all time. This is not just for its innovative engineering design, but also for its immense popularity, with nearly 2 million units produced, and not forgetting the extremely reliable 4 cylinder engine. The W115 uses a straight 4 cylinder and straight 5 cylinder engine which ranged in displacement from 2.0 - 2.4 litres, and these were sold as the “200”, “220”, “230”, and the “240”. The Mercedes was an upmarket executive mid-sized saloon as it was somewhat smaller than the S-class.
In 1973, the W114/W115 was face lifted with small changes like a lower bonnet-line, a simpler front bumper with single piece design as well as a new front grill. The quarter-windows in the front doors were removed and, most noticeably, this is where the signature ribbed tail lights come in. They were designed this way to minimise dirt accumulation.
First registered on the 20th May 1976, this lovely Mercedes-Benz 230.4 has had just 1 owner. The owner took delivery of the Mercedes on the 29th June 1976 directly from Mercedes-Benz UK. The 230.4 even comes with the original paperwork and spec list for the car. The Merc was ordered with some specific requirements as the buyer was planning to take the car back to Egypt with him.

Certain circumstances meant that the owner never returned to Egypt with the car, and so enjoyed it here in the UK, and being a huge Mercedes fan, cherished every moment in it. At the beginning of 2000, the owner became unwell and used the car less and less, and it was last driven in 2003. Sadly, in 2010 the owner passed away. The Mercedes has remained at the same property and dry storage since 2003. It wasn't until late 2020 that a family member was able to make the decision to let the 230.4 go.
Upon bringing the 230.4 out of storage in early 2021, after 18 years, it was obvious that it would need a careful inspection to check everything. The car was given a full service and a light recommissioning with a new fuel pump, the brakes were given an overhaul and some electrical work to address a few bad connections, clutch slave cylinder and any other necessary items that were needed were replaced.
The V5 is present and as mentioned shows 0 previous owners. There are also 2 other old style V5’s showing the same owner. The Mercedes comes with 3 keys and all the locks are matching.
There is the original order form which, as already mentioned, has the list of options ordered with car, and delivery confirmation letter complete with wax stamps form Mercedes-Benz UK. Also present is the owner’s handbook and the service book which have in the back the original build cards used at the factory. Some receipts from the late 70’s, early 80’s for service items are with the paperwork.
Looking at the MOT certificates, the last MOT expired on 1st January 2003 with a mileage showing of 82,030 km.
Inside the 230.4, the chosen trim was MB Tex 167 which is still in fantastic condition. There are no signs of any wear or damage to the front seats, they might clean up a little, but to be honest as they are now, they suit the car just perfectly. Sitting in the front seat, with the optional extra armrest, is certainly nice and comfy with the seats still well sprung and no signs of sagging. The steering wheel shows no noticeable signs of wear, the instruments just behind have a reading of 82,218 kilometers on the odometer, or 51,087 miles. The clock is still in working order, along with all the other switches and heaters. The dashboard is in excellent condition and due to being stored inside has escaped any cracking. To the left of the steering wheel is a Grundig CB radio which is believed to be working but not tested. To the right there has been a Blaupunkt radio fitted with some speakers on the rear shelf. This does turn on and make noise but may need the aerial looking at to pick up a station correctly. Should you wish to remove the radio, in the glove box is the original radio blanking plate with the 230 badge.
The rear of the car is the same as the front, the seat has no wear or damage to it, the center armrest drops down and closes up with ease. The door cards to the front and rear are also in excellent condition with the manual windows opening and closing correctly. The Mercedes also has central locking which is operated via a vacuum pump. This works as it should and holds it’s vacuum. The carpet is like new throughout the passenger area and has been protected with rubber Mercedes mats.
Inside the boot area is the spare wheel, jack and wheel brace. There is a mag mount aerial stuck on the inside rear wheel arch for the CB. The original boot floor covering is in good condition and under that the floor is excellent, with no signs of corrosion that we could see.
This lovely 1976 Mercedes 230.4 is finished in Gold 422 and is in good condition for the age of the car. There are an odd couple of small rust spots towards the bottom of the arches but for a totally original 1976 car, it has to be said, it is better than you would expect. The paintwork all over the car shows signs of patina and there are a few dents down the edges of the wings which looks like it's been leaned on when people may have squeezed past it when it was in storage. That said, they are very light and could probably be removed by a paintless dent removal specialist. Or you could just leave them as it all adds to the character of the car.
From the front, the classic W115 lights are free from any cracks. There is some very slight pitting under the surface of the chrome on the light surrounds and also the bumper. The car looks to retain the original number plates. The bonnet aligns as it should with the grille and wings, there are a couple of light dents to the bonnet, but again, should be able to be removed easily.
Moving to the sides, the Merc is straight and all the panel gaps around the doors are uniform and true. There is just the odd bit where a panel has a small dent like the ones on the top of the wings. The chrome trim along the roof and swage line of the car is bright and free from any corrosion. There is some very, very slight pitting on the window surrounds and door handles, but as expected. All the glass in the car is original Mercedes, which all still have the stamp on the windows. Around to the rear, and the huge boot aligns like the rest of the panels on the car. The chrome trim does have a couple of dinks in it. The badges are all in excellent condition. The rear light lenses are free from any cracks and again, like the front, it looks to have the original number plate fitted. The fuel cap is the original with the Mercedes logo and also has the tyre pressure sticker inside the flap.
Onto the wheels and the colour coded hubcaps are all matching, one does have a dent in and one has some surface rust. The tyres would need to be replaced before the car was put fully into action again.
One thing that's worth a special mention about the 230 is the underside. It is in brilliant condition with no signs of any repairs to the floor and the arches have had a quick clean to reveal the original gold finish. All this makes a very solid car.
Mercedes fitted the W115 with an M115.951. This is a 2.3 litre 4 cylinder engine which produces 110 Bhp. This is coupled to a 4-speed manual gearbox.
Having had a service not so long ago the Mercedes starts up with the first flick of the key. There had been new plugs fitted, which were new but have been in the boot since before 2003 at the earliest. The Merc has also had points, condenser and fuel pump. It has developed on tickover a slight misfire but once revved this does clear, so this would need to be investigated by the new owner. There are no nasty or unwanted noises from the 2.3. We did spot a slight oil leak which looks to be coming from around the rocker gasket, so no big issue there.
The car has been driven out on the roads since the recommissioning and the seller reports that the car pulls well and goes through all the gears smoothly. The suspension on the Merc soaks up any bumps well to give a comfortable ride and the brakes bring it to a halt nice and straight.
To find a 1976 230.4, that’s a one owner car is something of a rare find nowadays, even better with this one its low mileage of 82,218 kilometers (51,087 miles) and being dry stored for the past 18 years.
This is a car that could be for the purists or maybe one for someone to subtly modify, as there is a growing trend and a great following for these cars. There is the misfire to sort out and the paint could go either way, you could leave it with some patina and character, or give it a freshen up with a respray. Whichever way you go it is a solid base to start with.
Whether you intend to enjoy a bit of 70’s motoring on a daily basis, or just at the weekend for the odd classic car rally, it is definitely a one owner car you will enjoy.
