BACKGROUND
The 928 combines the power, poise, and handling of a sports car with the refinement, comfort, and equipment of a luxury Grand Tourer.
Launched in Geneva in 1977 and voted Car of the Year for 1978, the front-engined 928's stylish hatchback body featured aluminium doors, bonnet and front wings in the interests of weight saving, while ingenious impact resistant 'bumpers' made of colour matched plastic were incorporated into the nose and tail.
The V8 engine, Porsche's first, displaced 4.5 litres and produced 234bhp.
HISTORY
This is not a restoration, but a perfect example of how a car should be looked after. The condition of this Series 1 928 is a credit to all its previous, and meticulous, owners. First delivered on 1st May 1982 it was kept and cared for by the same owner for the next 30 odd years being looked after by the local Porsche Dealer. It then passed through a couple of owners before ending up in another car enthusiast’s collection.
The current owner bought the car earlier this year and having only enjoyed 1,500 miles of purposeful driving, he has accepted a job overseas. While he briefly toyed with the idea of taking it with him, its simply not practical and as such he regretfully has to find it a new home. The car has continued to be garaged throughout his ownership as it evidently has been by previous owners too.
The previous owner was reportedly a stickler for detail and so engaged the services of George Morrison of Glasgow, a well-known Porsche specialist, to thoroughly go through the electrical system to eliminate any possible gremlins whilst also having the timing belt changed, fully serviced, and thoroughly checked over.
Over the last few months, the car has had the air conditioning re-gassed and a new MOT which expires in September 2022.
The only thing this car needs now is a new owner. everything else is immaculate, both inside and out, and ready to enjoy.
PAPERWORK
The V5c, original Driver’s Manual and service book are all present, together with a comprehensive and reassuring quantity of service invoices and MOT certificates going back through the years.
INTERIOR
The Navy and Silver leather interior just looks amazing and belies its age of nearly 40 years. It’s as clean and welcoming as it could be, beautifully finished off with Navy carpeting and floor mats.
Needless to say, everything works as it should and there is the benefit of a Pioneer Flip Screen Stereo that enables phone connection, Carplay and DAB radio. New Pioneer speakers have also been fitted to provide superb clarity and sound.
Cruise control and Air Conditioning are both in working order and the dashboard and binnacle are in excellent shape with no warping or cracking anywhere.
The ample boot area houses the space-saver spare wheel and is similarly nicely presented and carpeted.
EXTERIOR
The rare Zinc Silver Metallic paintwork and body is not only in incredible condition, but it also really shows off the very stunning clean lines of the Porsche 928.
The pop-up headlights work as they should and all the rubber door seals etc. are in great shape.
Wheels are the correct ‘tele-dial’ design and the Dunlop Sport tyres have plenty of tread left.
MECHANICS
As with all the other aspects of this 928, this car is in absolutely near perfect condition and the mechanics have been just as well looked after by its careful owners.
Everything that has needed doing at any time has just been done and anything not working correctly has also been addressed. A recent full service - changing of the all-important timing chain, coupled with the service history and provenance of this car, plus the way it looks and drives of course, should make this a great car to own and drive.
It’s no surprise that it starts, goes, drives and stops exactly as it was designed to do.
THE APPEAL
To find a Series 1 Porsche 928 in such an original and pristine condition is most certainly a rarity these days.
A well looked after and properly maintained example with a full history and documentation is always going to be top of every would-be 928-enthusiast list.
Presented in such a fabulous colour, condition and the fact that it’s a Porsche 928, it’s hard to find a reason not to cease this opportunity.
Porsche. There is no substitute.
