The Background

The Renault 5 is a four-passenger, three or five-door, front-engine, front wheel drive hatchback supermini manufactured and marketed by the French automaker Renault over two generations: 1972–1985 (also called R5) and 1984–1996 (also called Super 5 or Supercinq).

The Renault 5 became the best-selling car in France from 1972 to 1986, with a total production exceeding 5.5 m vehicles over a 14-year period, making it France's most popular car.

The History

This particular Renault 5 was one of the latter produced Gen 1 cars in Jan 84.

The first owner bought it from her local Renault dealer on 2/ 11/ 1984 with 548 miles on the clock and four years later traded it back in with 9,978 miles on the clock. It was then purchased by its second owner who had the car for Twenty six years. It was cherished and kept it in a heated garage, he had the car serviced and MOT’d every year by his local ford garage regardless of miles covered.

Unfortunately, this elderly owner sadly passed away some years ago and the car stood garaged from that time until it was purchased as part of the deceased estate.

The third owner, a collector of classic cars, took ownership and recommissioned the car replacing all engine gaskets and fluids, replaced the tyres and once more the 5 was ready for the open road again.

It was then purchased by the current owner nearly two years ago.

The Paperwork

Present are a number of mot certificates and servicing invoices with a folder 10 pockets deep. There is a V5C , an original brochure and promotional material that came with car from new.
According to the DVLA this car is one of 2 cars left registered in England in the colour red.

The Interior

This is the LE 2 GTL model and extras on this model were glass sunroof, digital clock, headrests, radio, and a 5 speed gearbox.

The car is in clean original condition inside commensurate with its low mileage and it has clearly been well cared for.

The Exterior

The outside of this Renault 5 is largely original , it is estimated to retain 95% of its original paintwork with only light paint work having been carried out over the years. The underside of the car is in good shape for a 36 year old vehicle.

The bumpers have been painted black recently, they were originally red and faded with some scuff marks as to be expected over the years with an elderly owner.

The car still has its own original alloys as well which can be put back on car if buyer wishes,  the original wheels would need light refurbishment to make them perfect.

The car currently sits on 4 nearly new Gordine alloy wheels and new tyres acquired from Italy which do look fantastic on the car.

The Mechanics

The current owner has just completely serviced the car from top to bottom regardless of cost.

It has just undergone a very detailed and complete service including new rear discs and a full service. All fluids and oil replaced, all belts replaced, all ball joints and bushings replaced with all invoices to prove.

The rear slave cylinders are being rebuilt as it has stood a while and not been used. A new plastic strip for front window has also recently been purchased as its original window strip has discoloured.

The car runs and drives well as again is commensurate with such a low mileage example that’s had all careful owners.

The Appeal

The Renault 5 was in basic form, a cheap, happy go lucky hatch back from French supremos Renault. They came in many different trim options , all the way up to the rapid Renault 5 GT Turbo. There were even some fire breathing and very successful rally versions!

This particular example is not the white knuckle ride performance version but instead it’s a nice clean, largely original, rare trim model. As classics go, its very low mileage and has all of the right history one could want from a classic car purchase.

If you’re a collector of quirky French hatchbacks, this could be a great vehicle to take a more indepth look at!

Making a secure purchase on Car & Classic Auctions

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 5-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000+ £500.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
