The Background
SS Cars Limited of Coventry manufactured the SS Jaguar 100 between 1936 and 1940. They intended to reflect the 100mph maximum speed and approved by Sir William Lyons, the model name “Jaguar” was given to the range.
Only 198 SS100’s were built with the 2.5 litre and 116 with the more powerful 3.5 engine. Cars in good condition now reach in excess of £300,000. With the rarity becoming difficult to track these cars down, boutique car manufacturer, Suffolk Sports Cars set the standard in terms of reproducing this iconic sports car.
Suffolk Sports Cars went in to liquidation in 2020 and now the cars they reproduced from the 1930s to 1950s are surely going to be a desirable part of the classic car world.
Based around a substantial box-section chassis tailored to accept XJ6 suspension, brake, steering and drivetrain assemblies, the production version was predominantly supplied in 'home-build' form at the rate of four a year until 1996 when the manufacturing rights were purchased by Roger Williams of Suffolk Sportscars. Reborn and refined as the Suffolk SS100, the design remains in production to this day.
