Unveiled at Geneva in 1977 and voted Car of the Year for 1978, the new 928 was intended as an upmarket replacement for the long-running 911, but in the event Porsche's traditional rear-engined classic would outlive its younger sibling.
The front-engined 928's ground breaking hatchback body used aluminium for the doors, bonnet and front wings in the interests of weight saving, while ingenious impact-resistant 'bumpers' made of colour-matched plastic were incorporated in the nose and tail.
Porsche’s first V8 engine displacing 4.5 litres, produced 234bhp. A choice of five-speed transaxle gearbox or three-speed automatic were offered, the latter being the most common choice. In 1979 the 928 S with 4.6-litre engine arrived and then in 1986 the model was further revised and updated, becoming the 928 S4.
The V8 now produced 320bhp courtesy of twin-cam, 16-valve cylinder heads and enlargement to 4,957cc, giving the S4 a top speed of over 160mph. Porsche has not made anything like the 928 since 1996, and today these underrated modern classics are increasingly seen as offering exceptional value for money.
First registered in October 1986 to Maltin Car Concessionaires and then to Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd this S4 must be one of the earliest of the series delivered. It sports the attractive combination of metallic Marine Blue paint, and matching blue with white pinstripe velour and leather interior. The Vendor bought the 928 in 2016 and has used it until recently as her daily driver.
A long-time member of the Porsche club and 928 Register she wanted a four seater she could depend on. That resulted in plenty of work being undertaken to the car as purchased to make it reliable, followed by continuous maintenance. She states that mechanically the car is in great health and it goes like a train, the 5 litre V8 sounds great and the auto box shifts as it should with working double kick-down available when required!
The alloy wheels were refurbished and 3 point seat belts replaced the lap belts in the rear (for the school run of course!) Now with use of another daily car she has decided that with her children getting bigger, and having not had the opportunity to drive it much during lockdown it’s time to part with it.
There is a nice fat file of history with the Porsche showing a vast amount of care and attention has been lavished on it over the past 35 years. MOTs certificates stretch back to 1997, and there are literally dozens of invoices on file.
The Service book has 22 stamps from its first service in 1987 to the last stamp from 2014. It shows the timing belts were changed in 2010 at 105,000 miles. The current MOT runs until May 2022. The previous owner had the car for approximately ten years and in 2009 treated it to a respray which is probably when a later 928 GTS rear bumper and teardrop mirrors were added.
There is a Driver’s Manual, the Service Book and two sets of keys including the original red valet/service keys. There is also a set of 4 cards for identifying the fuse ratings and location.
The smart pinstriped blue velour and leather combo interior suits the car despite showing its age in places. Everything is there, and appears to function correctly. It has also had a full valet.
According to the Vendor the electric sunroof works as does the air conditioning. The seats have a few issues, mainly due to wear and tear, and it would be a relatively easy project to replace the worn sections. In fact there is about 1.5 metres of the pinstripe velour fabric included with the car, which should be enough the recover the bits that require attention.
The boot area shows no sign of leaks, and under the rear cargo net and shelf there is the original Vredestein run flat spare and jack. Most of the original toolkit is still present behind the rear boot panel.
The exterior of the 928 presents pretty well, benefitting from its 2009 respray in its original Marine Blue Metallic. However, there are a couple of issues to note. The paint on the sunroof has reacted, possibly due to a car cover, and shows some heat cracking. This is limited to the sunroof itself so it would be an easy job to bring this back to the standard of the rest of the car.
There is also some paint cracking on the driver’s side front wing and rear spoiler. Apart from that as you can see from the photographs the exterior looks about right. The wheels, refurbished in 2016, show a little curb rash in places but are clean and sport Ovation VI338 tyres, fitted in 2018, with little wear.
Recently the Vendor spent over £2000 having the sills replaced on both sides as they had been highlighted at its MOT, although currently there is no invoice for this work on file.
Under the bonnet the V8 fills the bay, and although it could all do with a clean the overall condition looks acceptable with no obvious visible leaks. Invoices show that it had new filters and an oil change in April this year, and a new battery in March.
Other recent work includes an ignition module, blower motor, ignition barrel with a new key plus a spare, and then going back a little further all new anti-roll bar bushes, brake hoses and a headlight relay in 2016.
The 928 was a groundbreaking car when new and the shape has aged well and still turns heads.
Often overlooked these cars are as practical today as they were when new, and there are just enough around to guarantee a good supply of parts without being a common sight. With increasing prices and demand from collectors in recent years, good examples like this 928 are proving to be a sound investment.
