The Background

Entering production in 1984, the W124 family of vehicles were the successor of the W123, designed and penned by the legendary Bruno Sacco and featuring a number of technological and mechanical refinements compared to its predecessor, along with numerous body styles from 3-door coupés to luxurious 6-door limousines.
On the estate/long-wheelbase variants (such as the 200T we have here) the rear suspension used a self-levelling setup, yet employed rear coil springs to maintain the standard ride height when parked.
The estate variants were classed as ‘S124’ and were available in 5 or 7-seat layouts. Interestingly, the S124 models lasted in production for longer than their saloon or coupés stablemates, over-lapping with the introduction of the W210.

The History

This lovely 200T is not only a fine example of what many would argue is one of the most handsome cars to come from Mercedes, but also benefits from long-term ownership, having been in the care of the previous-bar-one owner for 29 years, being used as an everyday car by an elderly couple, who made sure the car was kept in top condition despite its minimal mileage, and only sold up once the husband sadly passed away around three years ago.
Having come into the care of the previous owner who “just had to have it” the car remained in excellent condition but was used very rarely, in order to preserve the car’s condition and history.
In original condition throughout, this is a fantastic ‘time warp’ S124 that also appears to be free of the usual rear suspension ‘bounce’ that can affect these self-levelling suspension equipped cars.
Whilst in the care of our vendor, the car has been serviced (within the last 25 miles, we’re told) and extensively detailed both inside and out, meaning the next owner simply needs to jump in and enjoy!

The Paperwork

Included with the car is the V5 showing only three former keepers, the full complement of original Mercedes books and manuals, and the stamped service record.
There are also numerous invoices for various maintenance work, including a new water pump in 2014, and other miscellaneous service items.

The Interior

Recently detailed to a very high standard prior to being offered for sale, the grey cloth interior of this 200T has worn extremely well, and hides its age very well indeed.
Barring the odd bit of bolster wear and a few light scuff marks, we can see no sign of any damage, rips or tears to any of the seats, with even the driver’s seat remaining in excellent condition.
Elsewhere, the high-traffic areas such as the door cards, steering wheel and shifter have the odd wear mark here-and-there, but they are still excellent for a car of this age and mileage, and the wear is certainly less than commensurate for the car’s condition.
Further evidence of the car’s light usage and cherished nature can be found in the cavernous rear load area, which is also free of any heavy wear or damage and is in excellent shape, including the fold-up third row of seats.
Up above, we can see no evidence of headliner wear or sagging, whilst on the dashboard the wooden trim is in very good shape with only a few minor marks, and even the original radio remains in place - wonderful!

The Exterior

Continuing the cherished theme seen on the inside, the paint and bodywork of this S124 is still in fantastic condition for its age, presenting very well on the whole and with no untoward marks, blemishes or dents that can be seen from afar.
Up close, there are some wear-and-tear marks consistent with a used vehicle. There are some light marks noted on the front bumper insert and splitter, and if you look really close, we’d expect the odd stone chip and light blemish to become visible, but nothing that stands out from the photographs we’ve seen.
As as we can tell, there is no sign of any damage to the light lenses, and all of the trim pieces look to be present and correct, in great condition as per the rest of the vehicle.
All four wheels are in very good condition, and wrapped in Goodyear rubber.

The Mechanicals

Recently serviced and with no known mechanical faults, the 2.0-litre M102.922 inline-four engine is in reportedly rude mechanical health, with no issues reported from the transmission or clutch either.
The engine itself presents in line with the rest of the car, in that it has clearly been cherished in addition to the recent detailing. There looks to be no sign of any major oil or fluid leaks that we can see, though there is some typical staining to the exhaust manifolds.
The most recent MOT - dated 11 August 2021 - shows a clean pass with no advisory items.
The MOT history is worth highlighting - since 2010, there have been no failure items and not so much as an advisory noted against the car!

The Appeal

A full-on time warp example of the venerable 200T that has clearly been cherished throughout its lifetime, this S124 is a true survivor car, that has no doubt carried numerous family members and holds cherished memories.
Now, having benefitted from long-term ownership and only a handful of careful owners with minimal use since, this wonderful boxy estate is on the hunt for a new custodian to continue its cherished existence - could it be you?

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
