Bentley Motors Limited in Crewe, Cheshire produced the extremely successful Turbo R from 1985-1997. The Turbo R was sold alongside the Mulsanne for a few months as the Mulsanne ceased production in 1985. As Its predecessor was coming to the end of production the Turbo R was given some welcomed upgrades to set the new model aside from the Mulsanne. In october 1986 ready for the 1987 model the Turbo R benefited from receiving fuel injection, anti-lock brakes, slimmer sports seats and a higher rear axle ratio.
“R” stands for “roadholding”. In a bid to make the Turbo R better handling than the Mulsanne the Bentley engineers upped the front anti-roll bar rates by 100% and the rear by 60%, also with increased damping. A Panhard anchor to the rear sub-frame was also introduced, which reduced the side to side movement. This resulted in a much more stable vehicle especially when driving with some spirit.
The engine used in the Turbo R is 6.750 cc and known as the “Six and Three-Quarter”. It was previously used in the Bentley Mulsanne which in the early days was fitted with Solex carburetors. As it came to the end of production in 1985 Bentley introduced fuel injection to the Turbo R to replace the carburetors which resulted in added torque.
First registered on 4th January 1989, this Lagoon Blue Bentley Turbo R has had just 4 previous keepers. The current seller of the Turbo R acquired the car in December 2020 with a plan to add it to his already large collection of vehicles. Since then however, another vehicle the seller would like to expand his collection with has come up for sale, which means the Bentley has to go to make room.
Looking back through the MOT history the Turbo R has covered just over 4,000 miles since 2006 and been on and off the road for a few years around 2008 - 2019
The Bentley comes complete with the V5 and shows 4 previous keepers. The car has a fresh MOT which passed with no advisories and this expires on 12th January 2022.
The Turbo R still retains the original leather Bentley folder together with the leather bound owner's manual, radio instructions and service book which has a total of 14 stamps from independent Rolls Royce and Bentley specialists. Regularly serviced up until 85,773 shows it has been well maintained although there are no receipts with the car.
The Bentley’s interior is certainly like stepping into luxury. As you open the door you notice the cream leather with the contrasting blue piping to match the exterior. The seats are in brilliant condition, with just a small 1.5” of wear on the piping of the drivers bolster. The walnut burr dash is in excellent condition with no cracks. The seller reports that all the switches and gauges are working as they should, and there are no warning lights. The odometer is showing 90,588. The steering wheel does have a wood effect steering wheel cover fitted and so we are unable to see if there is any wear to the original. The lower part of the dash is trimmed in the same matching cream leather as the seats and in good condition. Still in place is the original Blaupunkt radio cassette.
The Turbo R still retains the original blue lambswool mats, which are definitely like putting your feet in your favorite pair of slippers. These have done a fine job of protecting the leather trimmed blue carpets of the Bentley. Another nice touch to keep the back seat passengers even more comfortable are the matching blue carpeted foot rests that sit in the back of the front seats. The headlining again, like the rest of the interior, is well presented. The door cards are capped with Walnut burr like the dash and these are in good condition although there are a few age related chips to the lacquer.
Into the boot area and the carpet is in excellent condition with no signs of really having much use. The Bentley still has the original tool kit and spare bulb kit which is nice to see, as these usually go missing. The jack and wheel brace are also in place.
This 1989 Turbo R is finished in Lagoon Blue with a twin silver pinstriping. It is a stunning colour. That and the sheer size of it, at just over 5.2 meters long and nearly 2.5 tons, the car is huge!
Starting at the front is Bentley’s most recognisable grille and 4 headlamp set up, as seen on many Bentleys and Rolls-Royce of this era. The bumper is in good condition but as you would expect, it does have some age related stone chips. The headlights are free from any cracks. The paintwork has been touched up along the leading edge of the wings and grille where there are a few stone chips.
Moving around to the sides, the Turbo badges are present at the base of both front wings. It does look like there could be some body filler at the bottom of the drivers wing and there's also some slight blistering on the front edge of the arch where it meets the front valance. The panel gaps are all uniform and straight. There are a couple of very small car park dinks in the drivers door. The rest of the car is pretty much nice and straight with just the odd age chip that occurs over the years. One of the common areas to look at on a Bentley of this age is the rear arches, and although there are some signs of rust there, it does look like this could be caught quite easily before it got out of hand.
To the rear of the Turbo R the boot shuts and aligns up as it should and the badges are present. The rear nearside light does have a small split and there is a small piece missing which has been filled with silicone to stop water entering the light. The rear valance needs refitting to sit nicely on the nearside corner.
Onto the Bentley’s wheels. They do have a small amount of corrosion and a couple of scuffs but are generally in good condition and the locking cap key is also present. The tyres are matching Avon 255/65R15, and have good tread left on them.
The Bentley Turbo R is a high performance vehicle produced by Bentley Motors Limited from 1985 to 1999. The Bentley Turbo R uses the massive 6.750 cc also known as the “Six and Three-Quarter” fuel injected turbocharged V8 engine. It produces 355 Bhp and a huge 553 ft-lb of torque. Performance wise, it is not to be sniffed at for a car that comes in at a hefty 2450kg. The 0-62 mph is seen in 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 146 mph.
As you flick the key the Bentley growls into life. Whilst ticking over the V8 is so smooth, you have to listen twice to hear it. Touch the loud pedal and things come alive! One good rev and yep, that's a V8! as the whole car moves.
The seller reports that the Bentley pulls well through all the gears and the automatic gear change is smooth. There are no nasty knocks or noises from either the transmission or the Turbo R suspension and the brakes stop the 2450kg with ease.
This 1989 Bentley Turbo R is definitely an icon of its era, fast, sturdy, with more luxury than you can shake a stick at. Eighties engineering at the highest level, with 355 bhp and 553 ft-lb of torque under your right foot, it will certainly put a smile on your face.
This is your chance to step into a luxury automobile at a fraction of what it cost in 1989. There may be some bodywork flaws, but in reality these wouldn't take much to put right. When you consider the cost new to what it is now it would definitely be classed as a bargain, or you could just enjoy the Bentley as it is and make the most out of the turbocharged V8.
