Due to the VW Jetta’s sister, the Golf hatchback, the UK market always favoured the hot hatch over the saloon, this makes it a much rarer and we think desirable car than the 5 door version, when was the last time you saw a late 80’s Jetta on the road, or even at a classic car show?
The 1.8 engine produces a punchy 110 bhp and for its time was a rapid and more economical choice over the 16V version, and also a tad cheaper.
The car has been based in Charlton it's whole life!
The previous owner has kept every MOT, tax disc and receipt while the car was in there ownership stating back to the late 1990's.
The History
The Volkswagen Jetta was produced in 1979 to add a niche product to the Golf hatchback, ever popular in North American markets this saloon out sold the five door equivalent two to one across the pond. By mid 2011 over 10 million Jettas had been sold, and this second generation MK2 model bears the iconic GTI emblem. Also in the black paintwork the car has a stealthy stance to it and belies its punchy performance.
This car benefits from just four owners (father and daughter owner 2 and 3), with the current owner having it since 2017. The sale is due to not getting the use out of the car, in fact since its MOT in August 2020 it has covered less than 100 miles. The 2 previous owners actually live rather close to the current owner in South East London, so the cars whereabouts for the majority of its life can be traced rather well. We are told one of the previous owners kept every MOT, tax disc and receipt dating back to 1990!
The Paperwork
The car has paperwork from the third owner who took ownership from her father, with the current owner in the last five years keeping it technically sound with a new cambelt fitted in August 2017. The car passed its MOT in August 2020 and according to the owner runs as good as new.
The interior
The interior with the iconic GTI check cloth is in superb condition, all plastics are unmarked and show the exceptional Volkswagen build quality, the only wear is to be expected, on the drivers seat bolster which is ripped and would require attention. A Sony radio/Minidisc is fitted with Pioneer speakers in the rear parcel shelf, however the seller has stated the radio isn't fully working at the moment (It was recently, so may be a small issue to resolve!)
Roof lining is in good order and so are the carpets, all manual window handles work and again are in excellent condition.
The Exterior
This car dates back to 1989 so being over thirty years old it does show wear and tear, if anything this shows that the paintwork to our knowledge is genuine from day one. The photos show the scratches around the bodywork and also rust that was visible to our eyes, these are mainly around the rear near side passenger door inside b the footwell, right hand bottom corner of the windscreen, patches around the bonnet edge and also on the tailgate.
Tyres are all in very good condition with good tread, decals on near side are slightly ripped, and plastics generally around the bumpers are in good condition. There is a small dent on the near side front panel and also a scuff on the near side rear door, both shown in the photographs which would require some attention.
The owner does have the original wheels, which are not in great condition and can be included in the price of the car.
The Mechanics
This VW Jetta has been maintained by the last two owners and last year had a new battery installed. The history backs up theMOT and parts history and the owners comments that it runs as good now as when he purchased it five years ago, having used it very little, hence the sale. In its current ownership, the timing belt has also been changed just a few hundred miles ago.
The Appeal
If you hark back to owning the VW GTI then surely this is the cooler option, Jetta’s in the UK are a very rare sight these days and although requiring some exterior work this car mechanically runs well and the interior is in exceptional condition.
Go on, treat yourself to a car that just needs some TLC on that svelte exterior and have a bit of iconic Eighties history with the Jetta GTI.
