The Background

Peugeot launched the 205 GTI in 1984 and it was considered to be the pick of all GTI-badged cars. The pocket rocket had all the style, performance, handling, but one crucial thing that stood out was that it was more than £1,000 cheaper than the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Originally the GTI came with a 1.6 litre 105 bhp engine. Coming in at just 850kg gave the French fancy an excellent power to weight ratio which powered the 205 0-62mph in just 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 116mph.
In 1986 the 1.6 engine was given a power increase to 115bhp, but it was towards the end of 1986, we were given the faster 1.9 GTI. This may have had a 50kg weight increase to 900kg but it was still capable of producing a 0-62mph time with an impressive 7.8 seconds and boasted a top speed of 127mph. This was down to the huge power increase to 130bhp.
Such low weight meant that the car corners flat with very little body roll, and the front responds very well to every single input from the steering wheel, making it a real fun car to drive, be it the 1.6 or 1.9 litre.

The History

This lovely Miami Blue Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 was first registered on 1st August 1990. It is one of very few and when I say few, it really is a few, that was fitted and painted with a Zender body kit at the factory. From research carried out by the owner it is believed to be one of five that came out of the factory with this body kit on. Even though it is a Zender body kit, all the numbers on the mouldings are stamped up with Peugeot and their part numbers.
The seller of this French classic acquired the car on 17th June 1994 where it was used only occasionally due to his work commitments, which will lead us into more about this special GTI and everything that comes with it.
Why would you choose anything other than a 205 GTI when you happen to work for Peugeot Sport UK as a Race, Rally Engineer. Travelling all over the world with the Peugeot Rally Team and the iconic T16 Group B rally car is where he specialised in building engines and gearboxes for the team. These were just some of the tasks the seller was responsible for.  He was also a test driver and involved with the race, engine and gearbox development. This was for Peugeot Sports Director Des O’Dell and his successor Mick Linford. Spanning over twenty five years the seller also worked for Richard Longman working and developing the BTCC cars.
After not using the car for a few years the seller decided to pass it to his father to try and give the Peugeot some use. His father didn't really use the car as much as he thought he would and so the seller got the car back after his father sadly passed away. So with the car back in the garage, again not getting much use, he decided to make the car more drivable and put some of his massive knowledge from his career into his own car, but more on that shortly.
The 205 has been kept in dry storage since first owned and the last time it was used on the roads was in 2010. It does get started and moved regularly but not driven like Peugeot intended. This is why the time has come to let it go to someone who will get the joy and experience of this subtly tweaked 1.9 205 GTI.

The Paperwork

The V5 is present and shows 6 former keepers and as mentioned some of those have been the seller twice and his father.
There are two sets of keys and key fobs with the car and also the owners manuals, radio instructions and service books, complete with service stamps. It's also been serviced by the seller himself and to be honest, a works rally engineer carrying out your service is something sure to give you peace of mind.
As you look back through the 14 mot certificates you can see the car only covered an odd few hundred miles each year for many years and it last held an MOT certificate on 23 August 2010.
The seller will be putting 12 months MOT on at the end of the auction.
Now you may need to grab your drink of choice for this!
Included with the sale are the following thousands of pounds worth of spares and also specialised manufacturer tools to carry out various jobs if needed. These include:

The Interior

The 205 GTI is typical 90’s styling and sitting inside it puts you right back there. The dashboard is in excellent condition with the clocks and switches working as they should. The odometer is showing a low 66,732. The steering wheel has been changed for a thicker MOMO version to give a more comfortable grip and the car also has power assisted steering. To keep the carpets protected the GTI is fitted with genuine Peugeot rubber mats. Inside the boot area is nice and tidy with the original cover over the floor still in place and in good condition.
The car came with full grey leather seats which are in excellent condition and don’t show any real signs of wear to either the bolsters or the leather. The door cards are in the same excellent condition. Also fitted are electric windows and central locking which is working as it should. In the entertainment department the Peugeot is fitted with the original Clarion cassette player, which is working and the code is present with the owner's manual.
Fitted to the GTI is the 90’s version of a panoramic roof! It's quite a big sunroof which slides back as it should, and the interior panel can either be open or closed accordingly.

The Exterior

As previously mentioned this 1.9 205 GTI stands out from the rest with the factory fit Zender body kit, finished in Miami Blue.
Starting at the front the headlights, indicators and fog lights are all in good condition. The front bumper and bonnet edge don’t really have many noticeable stone chips and the bonnet aligns straight and true with the wings.
Moving to the sides of the 205, again the panel gaps are all equal and uniform. There is a small dent in the drivers wing which sadly only happened a few weeks ago after a box in the garage fell off a shelf and caught the wing. The body kit is still fitted just as well as it was when it left the factory.
The rear of the car is the same standard as the rest.  The boot and body kit align as they should. The hatch has the Zender rear spoiler attached again stamped with Peugeot and their part number. The glass on the car is scratch free that we could see and has been etched all around, even including the sunroof.
The wheels have been changed for some Speedline Corse 7j wheels which have a similar look  to the 1.9 GTI style alloys, but come with that extra bit of a unique look. The tyres are all good apart from 1 which has a nick in the side wall (not so much of an issue as it somes with two spares).
The car is extremely well presented and looks to be a very honest car. There are a couple of small age related chips but really it’s nothing when you consider the age of the car.

The Mechanics

The 1.9 205 GTI was never known as a slow car and would put a grin on your face whenever you drove one. The seller knew different! After his career around group B rally cars and BTCC he knew just how to give the car that bit more drivability and excitement.
Whilst working for Richard Longman in 2009 he proceeded to rebuild the engine to a works spec blueprint Fast Road engine. The gearbox had the same treatment and was fitted with close ratio gears and a Quaife limited slip differential. Helping things escape easier, a full Magnex stainless steel exhaust has been fitted including the exhaust manifold. Since the rebuild the car has covered less than 1000 miles.
The seller reports that the car handles, drives, stops, pulls through and changes gear just as it should,  and is a pleasure to drive with the additional power and close ratio gearbox.

The Appeal

This 1990 Peugeot 205 GTI is an excellent and well presented example. You have the factory fitted body kit, Speedline Corse alloys, Blueprint Fast Road engine with less than 1000 miles on, close ratio gearbox, with Quaife limited slip diff and not to mention the masses of spare parts.
What’s not to love about it! With prices on the up it's time to grab an honest original 90’s classic.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
