Background

Porsche produced the 928 in 1978 as a replacement for the 911. The design brief was to build a supercar to cross continents in comfort and style. Over the next 17 years it was subject to constant improvement until they arrived at the  GTS version which is the ultimate.

The GTS’s were only made for 3 years and the economic climate at the time curtailed sales which now makes them quite rare. This is a genuine GTS version and is a rare truly awesome Grand Tourer.

The History

This example was originally purchased  from Cameron’s the  Porsche dealer in Perth. The Glasgow owner ordered it to be supplied in Mercedes Nautic Blue.

Having previously bought several new Porsche’s , Cameron’s were happy to oblige him and this unique colour is listed on the Porsche build certificate. He kept the car until 2009. During his ownership it clocked up 160,000 miles on regular mechanically stress free commutes from Glasgow to London. Not a problem as these were designed for half a million kilometres.

The full-service history did not come with the car but his son has confirmed its regular fastidious maintenance and managed to obtain what records did exist from Porsche Glasgow. They are incomplete but indicate that it was put in for any work that was needed. The overall condition supports this assertion and will not disappoint.

Around 2009 the original owner traded the car in for a Bentley and the car then went to a collector and restorer.  As far as the current owners is aware he didn’t use the vehicle but carried out extensive work. This included a glass out respray with all new rubbers, stainless steel exhaust system, new cup wheels, new spot lights, ABS module, brake pads and much more

The Paperwork

Comes with the original V5, and lots of paperwork showing previous history.

The Interior

The interior of beige leather seats and navy dash is in brilliant condition suggesting that in the previous owners commutes he travelled alone so the seats have rarely been sat in.

As you can see from the images, the interior is in good condition in the lovely contrasting colours of Beige and Navy Blue. We are told that with the exception of the boot release switch which is not working, and the Air Conditioning system requiring a re-gas, everything works as it should and there are no problems. It certainly is a comfortable place to sit.

The Exterior

As previously mentioned, due to the unusual colour choice, you probably won't see another 928 In this colour, due to it being a Mercedes colour. With that, bodywork looks to be in really good condition.

There are no obvious rust points over the car and the paint work certain doesn’t resemble a car that’s covered 160,000 miles. It’s a very pretty car with its wide rear end. The only thing that is noticeable is the paint blemish on the NSR wheel arch, just above the bumper (please see the images).

The Mechanics

The engine is strong and was smoke free when the car was being moved around for the images and maintained a stable oil pressure. Gearbox changes all operate nicely when warm.

The wheels are now very rare Cup wheels with correct offset for this model. These are immaculate and all tyres are good N rated. There doesn’t seem to be any obvious signs of rust on the paint work. The current owner, we are told has carried out the following:

- Timing belt and water pump
- In-tank fuel pump and filter
- New uprated aluminium radiator
- Air conditioning compressor and dryer
- Fuel lines
- New battery
- Front brake back plates and rear parcel shelf cover
- Larger collapsible spare wheel and a separate spare cup 1 to use instead of the collapsible.

Other work included oil service, flex plate was checked and released, deactivated the troublesome tyre pressure system and the air pump disconnected as it serves no purpose in the UK.

The car also comes with lots of various genuine parts, and the vendor advises that a full Porsche supplied service kit is included with the sale of the car.

The Appeal

These cars always grab attention. They don’t look like a “normal” Porsche, and that works in its favour. It was a very “out there” design from Porsche, which is arguably one of the most easily recognisable brands in the world, due to their only subtle design changes for decades.

The car is full of character and has been on many a road-trip, from Glasgow to London a  few years back. And that is what this car is all about, being a grand tourer… the rare breed of supercar that you can drive for hours over to France and feel fresh the other side and look forward to the return journey.

Accompany that with the – park it in a car park, walk away and turn and look at the car – styling, then this really does have it all. A fantastic opportunity to own an absolute classic.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
