The Background

The Mondial was styled by Pininfarina, and the body coach built by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, and could be bought as either a coupe or cabriolet. It is notable as Ferrari’s last mid engine V8 and with the 2+2 seating is a very useable classic Ferrari.

Introduced in 1980, the car ran until 1996 and the Mondial T was the final evolution, and one that was well received - Car and Driver in 1991 said:

"Not only does the Mondial T Cabriolet offer all the right pieces, but it also tingles your soul with all the right sensations...Admittedly, the Mondial t Cabriolet provides only a taste of the Grand Prix experience. But it's a stronger flavour than almost any other car can provide. Plus, the Mondial t is easily the most comfortable and practical of the high-priced Italian exotics."

The final Mondial evolution was 1989's Mondial t (Coupe and Cabriolet). It was a substantially changed model, "spearhead of a new generation of V8 Ferraris", according to Road & Track magazine. The Mondial's chassis would underpin a new generation of 2-seat Ferraris, right up to the Ferrari 360,

The 't' called attention to the car's new engine/transmission layout: the previously transverse engine mounted longitudinally while the gearbox remained transverse, thus forming a 't'. By adopting this layout, a longer engine could be mounted lower in the chassis, improving handling dramatically.

The 't' configuration was used by Ferrari's Formula One cars of the 1980s, and would be the standard for the marque's future mid-engined V8 cars, beginning with the 348, introduced later in the year. The transverse manual gearbox fitted with a Limited Slip Differential with a twin-plate clutch design with bevel gears driving the wheels. The "t" was home to other Ferrari firsts: It used power-assisted steering for the first time and had a 3-position electronically controlled suspension for a variable tradeoff between ride quality and road holding. It also had a standard antilock braking system.

The History

Starting life in Bradford, the Mondial was first registered in April 1993, where the supplying dealer, JCT 600 Specialist Cars, PDI’d and gave the first service.

During his first year of ownership she took the current owner, his wife, their two young children and their luggage to Monaco and Maranello for a magical and memorable holiday.

It has been well looked after by a variety of marque specialists and Ferrari dealers over the years, with all the owners seaming to be willing to fix any issues large or small, meaning the car has stayed in top condition and been ready to use throughout its life. Retains both sets of keys.

The Paperwork

The log book shows that having started in the north, the car soon moved south to Dorset and then Surry, with stamps from specialists and main dealers, including a cam belt in 1996 at just under 13,000 miles by Maranello, with later belts in 2004, 2011 and 2019 and 2020.

Although the main service work and other repairs have all been done by specialists, the current owner is very hands on and with his son has done many smaller jobs to the car in the 15 years he has owned it, with a sheaf of receipts for parts as well as many old MOTs and tax disks.

The car also comes with its leather book folder and original log book and hadn’t books.

The Interior

The cabin is in superb condition, Italian cars often have very high quality leather and the black seats are unmarked and not creased or worn, even on the drivers bolster. The leather continues on the centre console surround and the sloping dashboard, all looking like new as well as the steering wheel with its simple texture pattern on the spokes.

The re carpet is in fine condition, there is a little heel wear in the front footwells but not looking worn at all.

The instruments are bright and clear, and the owner tells us the switches and buttons al work, and in the centre is the iconic chrome gated manual gear shift.
The black leather continues to the door cards and rear seats, where again it is in excellent condition and when the roof is up the headlining in is unmarked.

In the rear boot, which has very good condition carpet, is the jack and wheel brace, and an Alpine CD changer to go with the cassette head unit in the dash.
The front trunk has the beautiful leather tool kit, which looks like it has all the items present.

The Exterior

Finished in the best colour combination in our opinion, and that of Ferrari's for that matter seeing as the original press car was to the same spec, the body work is in fantastic shape, the panels are straight and unmarked by stone chips or dings with excellent paint. There are tiny bubbles in the paint in a couple of locations - on the bonnet by the louvres, on the bottom of the drivers door and one sill edge. Looking under the car the floor pan appears very solid with just some underseal missing showing solid metal, and looking at the door bottoms shows solid metal.

The blue hood is in excellent condition, the fabric outer is like new and the rear window has no creases or mark and is bright and clear to look through.
The pop up headlamps, work as they should and the badges and trim are all in great shape. It has been fixed with genuine Ferrari 348 alloy wheels which are not kerbed but one does have a mark on the face. They are shod in recent Continental tyres.

Mechanics

This Mondial has had many thousands spent in maintenance over the years, even small niggles being addressed so it runs and drives just as it should. The owner made a spread sheet of maintenance from 1994 to 2008 which is pictured in the documents including the fitment of a new stainless steel exhaust.

In June 2020 along with a full service it had cam and auxiliary belts as well as a brake fluid flush and repairs to the air conditioning system which was tested working at the time and this year it has had new rubber boots for the steering rack and a new battery has just been fitted.

The appeal

The straight edge design of Eighties cars has never been hotter, and when it's wearing a prancing horse badge even more desirable. Don't forget these retain the same engine as that for the 348 and the electronic suspension, power steering and ABS from the F355!

Understated and effortlessly cool in silver with a blue roof, the Mondial was not only great to drive as well as look at, with its 2+2 seating is the perfect Ferrari for someone wanting to take the kids in their classic, and although the car is in fantastic condition its at that sweet spot where its still a useable exotic that you shouldn’t be afraid to use, and on the drive to the photo location turned heads as easily as it coped with the traffic.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
