The Background

The Jeep Cherokee reached UK shores in 1993, by which point it had been in production for nine years.

Developed in alliance with Renault, it was Jeep’s first all new design since the 1963 Wagoneer was launched, and was Jeep’s first monocoque vehicle. Jeep marketed the Cherokee as a Sportwagon rather than an off road vehicle, predicting the trend toward sport utility vehicles in the following decade.

A smaller engine than usually found in 4x4s was used, as the lack of a separate chassis meant that weight could be kept down. Launched in France in 1989 and marketed through Renault dealers, it was subsequently offered in most European markets within the next five years. This model is the most prestigious XJ Cherokee of them all, the 4.0 Limited fitted with the High Output straight six engine.

The History

This car has been owned by the same family from new – in 2015 the first owner passed the car over to his son, who restored the car that year with full documentation. It had covered just 30,801 miles by this point.

Since then, just 6294 trouble free miles have been covered, described by its current custodian as extremely pleasurable. The car has full service history from new.

It is also worth noting that this car was amongst the first Cherokees delivered to the UK.

The Paperwork

In addition to the extensive history file, the car is presented with a current V5C certificate and is ready for transfer.

It also presents with an MoT valid to November 2022 showing no advisories, its original handbook and dealership case.

The Interior

The grey leather seats present in excellent condition, as do the dashboard, floor mats and door trims.

The electric windows all work, as do the electrically adjustable – and very comfortable – front seats. The original three spoke leather steering wheel is still present and in excellent condition. The headlining has some minor tears, while there is a small stain to the carpet in the front passenger footwell.

The car is offered with a plastic moulded boot tidy in order to prevent mess. Even the switches retain their screen printed text and logos, while there are no warning lights showing to the dash.

The Exterior

While there are some minor scratches to the blue paint, this is to be expected with a car that is almost thirty years old and is overall in excellent condition for its age and originality.

There is no visible rust to the car, either to the door frames or to the main shell. The car sits on four of the desirable cross-spoke polished alloy wheels, these would benefit from further polishing but none are corroded and all four hold air. The car is fitted with four recently purchased tyres.

The Mechanics

There are no unwelcome rattles or ticks from the 4.0 straight six engine, which can trace its ancestry back to the “Torque Command” engine fitted to the Rambler Classic.

The High Output 4.0 unit was first used in 1986 for the 1987 model year, offering improved strength, a better cam profile and better combustion chamber than the 4.2 litre six upon which it had been based. The Aisin AW4 four speed automatic  is still as smooth as when the car was new, and is well-geared to suit the engine’s low down torque. The Power switch ensures a very swift start from standstill.

The Appeal

The XJ Cherokee was one of the first of a new breed of road-friendly 4x4s targeted not at the farmer but at the city or country dweller who might rarely want to take his car off road. Given the ever increasing popularity of this market sector, that makes the Cherokee one of the most historically significant models of the latter half of the twentieth century.

This car is finished in a desirable colour scheme, offered with the most desirable “Limited” specification and presents in excellent condition throughout. The angular shape and powerful stance still turns heads today as you will not see many on the road with such a pedigree and ultra-low milage. It is a rare find indeed.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
