Highlights

• Gorgeous specification
• Engine rebuild in recent years
• Excellent urban / suburban cruiser

The Background

Produced between 1989 and 1994, the 964-era of Porsche 911 was considered to be a whopping 85% new in comparison to its predecessor, featuring significant styling alterations, mechanical upgrades and a trio of body styles, namely the coupé, cabriolet and Targa.
A new M94 naturally-aspirated, air-cooled flat-six engine was used, the suspension system substantially upgraded utilising coil springs and shock absorbers rather than torsion bars, ABS and Power Steering were offered for the first time, and the 964 was also the first generation of 911 to offer all-wheel-drive (Carrera 4) and the use of the Tiptronic automatic transmission.

The History

Built during the last year of C2 production, this 1993-registered 964 Cabriolet is equipped with the aforementioned Tiptronic transmission, which makes it not only an excellent GT car, but also a fantastic urban cruiser, as our vendor and current owner has discovered.
With only 2,014 cabriolets built in 1993 for all markets and variants, this C2, right-hand-drive, UK-market car is an exceedingly rare example of the 964, which should certainly endear it to collectors and enthusiasts alike.
A lifelong Porsche enthusiast with a back-catalogue of cars that would make any Porsche nut hot under the collar, our vendor purchased this 964 during the summer of 2020, and proceeded to daily drive the car around the city with the roof down, making the most of the lovely weather and easy-going automatic transmission.
Having purchased the car, it was immediately shipped to GT ONE, who carried out a post-purchase inspection and some immediate remedial work to the fuel system and interior safety systems, with the paperwork for this (along with an overall health check sheet) being available below.
Since purchasing the car, the vendor left and moved to IBIZA for a number of months, returning in August 2021 and realising that this lovely 964 is, in fact, not ULEZ exempt, forcing the sale of this lovely example.

The Paperwork

Included with the car is a number of invoices relating to miscellaneous work carried out, such as a rebuild of the air conditioning system in 2013, a new hood in 2010, a stamped service book up until 2015, the owners manual, one key and a wedge of other invoices and paperwork.
The V5 is present, showing 11 former keepers.
It should be noted that the V5 shows that the car was previously written off and purchased back by a previous owner. The vendor states that this is likely due to bodywork damage during the mid 2000s, when these 964s were at the bottom of their value curve (cars were around £10,000) and the insurance company deemed it was not worthy of repair.
Suggesting the car was possibly vandalised or crashed whilst parked - resulting in bodywork damage - the car was then rectified with new panels and superficial bodywork, but the vendor assures us that there was no structural or mechanical damage.

The Interior

Finished in grey leather to complement the dark grey exterior, the cabin of this 964 will make 911 owners of any generation feel right at home, such is the obvious lineage to both predecessor and successor models.
The cabin itself is in excellent condition as far as we can see, with only minimal bolster wear visible to both front seats, and no sign of any major wear, rips, tears or staining that we’ve been made aware of.
In the rear, the back seats look to be in good order, and the fold-up windbreaker is present and correct.
There is some more noticeable wear visible to the door cards and luggage bins, along with other high-traffic areas such as the steering wheel, shifter and switchgear also wearing a light usage patina.
The vendor has reported no faults with the vehicle’s electrical systems or switch gear, and the folding roof is in full working order.

The Exterior

Finished in a deep grey metallic, this 964 looks absolutely fantastic, complete with contrasting black soft-top and 993 wheels, though it is unclear whether these were a later addition by a previous owner, or offered as an option due to this vehicle being produced during the last year of 964 C2 production.
From what we can see, the bodywork and paint are both in excellent condition throughout, with no tell-tale signs of damage, scuffs or major scratches that we can see, nor that we’ve been made aware of.

The Mechanicals

With a full engine rebuild (invoice below) having been carried out prior to our vendor taking ownership of the vehicle, this 964 C2 is reported to be in rude mechanical health, with the 3.6-litre flat-six engine being in “wonderful” condition, according to our vendor.
A full mechanical health check is available below, and was carried out by GT-ONE as a post-purchase inspection for our vendor. Whilst all the major work was taken care of at the time (such as work to the seatbelts) there is a priority-order list of other miscellaneous items that could be attended to, meaning there is plenty of scope for a knowledgeable enthusiast to further improve this wonderful air-cooled 911.
The most recent MOT exam - dated 29 January 2021 - shows a clean pass with no advisory items.

The Appeal

Widely regarded as the high-point of the air-cooled 911s for steering feel and blending comfort with raw driving experience, it’s no wonder that the 964 911 is so highly regarded by enthusiasts, collectors and drivers alike.
This particular example presents in very good condition throughout, with a clean MOT exam and impressive history, yet offers scope for further improvement and refinement by the next owner. A tantalising light winter project for any knowledgeable enthusiast, or a wonderfully usable example of a classic air-cooled 911.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
