BACKGROUND
The W124 series of E Class Mercedes are one of the most iconic and respected cars, that many consider the best Mercedes ever built.
They were incredibly well engineered and built and have earned a reputation for being bulletproof and easily capable of racking up a million miles as long as they are maintained correctly.
The E320 cabriolet was the final expression of the W124 range being made between 1993 and 1995, and featured the larger, more powerful, 217HP straight-six 3.2 litre engine, and a four-speed automatic transmission with sport and winter modes.
The Sportline optional package provided a slightly lowered ride height and specially tuned suspension including shorter, stiffer springs, struts and anti-roll bars. Slightly wider (7” rather than 6.5”) light alloy wheels were fitted along with quick ratio steering and a smaller steering wheel.
HISTORY
The current owner has enjoyed owning and driving this Mercedes for the past 10 years, always garaged and used sparingly but regularly throughout.
When he acquired the car, it had 151k miles on the clock, and it was clear that it had a few issues needing attention, but it came with that very important extra of a full Mercedes Benz service history that gave him the reassurance that this would be a car worth keeping.
The first job was to repair the NSF and OSF inner wings and chassis rails, a common weak spot on these models.
It has had a new radiator, engine ECU, alternator, front suspension and fuel pump fitted and the problematic wiring loom issue that occurs with these cars was also replaced.
During his ownership the car has been regularly serviced, using Mobil 1 oil exclusively, and anything that has gone wrong or needed attention has been attended to promptly.
A new hood was fitted 2 years ago.
PAPERWORK
The current MOT expires March 2022.
The V5 is present showing five previous owners and there is a healthy stack of paperwork including MOTs and receipts for repairs and servicing done by the present and previous keepers, including a fully stamped up service book with Mercedes Dealers and Specialists.
The car comes with 2 keys and an original Sportline key ring.
INTERIOR
The luxurious black leather interior still looks in great condition and benefits from many well-chosen original optional extras including sports design steering wheel, gearshift lever in leather trim, passenger air-bag, storage box in front tray, folding front armrests and heated front seats.
The draft deflector originally supplied with the car has been mislaid somewhere prior to current ownership.
The door cards, dashboard and switchgear are all in good shape and work as they should. A replacement Blaupunkt DAB radio has also been fitted.
The wood veneer on the centre cubby box is beginning to delaminate slightly, but otherwise it is hard to find fault with the 30-year-old interior.
The boot is clean and dry and features a first-aid kit, spare wheel, jack and tools.
EXTERIOR
The Almandine Red Metallic paintwork is still in fine condition with the odd very small and hardly noticeable scratch and the inevitable odd stone chip at the front.
The body looks straight and true with shut lines and trim all being as they should be. On close inspection, and as illustrated in the photographs, the drivers side door looks as thought it may need some adjustment, but it doesn’t affect its operation at all.
The new hood fits snugly and there is no sign of any water ingress anywhere. The electric hood mechanism works smoothly and correctly, and all the lights are clear with rubber seals showing no signs of any fading or cracking.
MECHANICS
Mechanically this car has been well cared for throughout its life, which is borne out by the way this car looks and drives.
All the common problems on this model have been addressed and, with a recent service, this car is ready to go and use straight away.
One look under the bonnet will help reassure the next owner of how the car has been looked after. It’s nice and clean with no signs of any oil or fluid leaks and everything looks as it should.
It reportedly starts, runs and drives perfectly.
THE APPEAL
This is the Sportline Edition of the E320 convertible of which only 89 models left the factory in right hand drive format. This in itself makes this car quite rare, making them elusive and appealing to the serious collector. Not to mention that the car is in excellent condition both inside and out and comes with that all-important full-service record and history from new.
It has a super colour combination and quite simply is a joy to drive. It is quite fair to say that among the Mercedes fraternity there is agreement that the W124 series were the last well-built Mercedes, and undoubtedly why they have been the taxi of choice for so many fleets around the world.
This is a fantastic opportunity to own a car that is not only an up-and-coming modern classic, but importantly, one you can enjoy on a daily basis, and being a full size 4-seater convertible, it really comes into its own when the sunshine makes an appearance.
