Background


Launched in 1991, the 106 was a long-lived champion. The facelifted range from mid-1996 was a step forward in terms of interior and equipment, and was a class leader of its type.

Considered by many to be one of the best small cars of the early 1990s, the Peugeot 106 was developed from the Citroen AX and shared much of its technology with the Citroen Saxo.

Offering robust construction, excellent ride and refinement for its time, plus superb fuel economy and lots of driver satisfaction it was a popular choice. Now a good example is still a very nice thing to drive, and the 106 is near the top of the retro supermini league.

History


This example is one of those cars that cause you to question how it could have survived so well, seemingly immune to the ravages of time, car parks and sunlight.  

Purchased new in 1997 on the Motability scheme from Peugeot dealers Hardie of Stirling it was used for about 18 months and about 1000 miles by its first owner before being sold in 1999. 

Moving south to a lady in Farnham it has been in her possession for the past 22 years, serviced annually and covering a mere 47,000 miles in that time. In exceptional condition throughout, it is a lovely example that looks and goes as well as it did back in ’97.

The Paperwork


One of the clues to the Peugeot’s condition is in the service book -21 stamps, one every year, mostly at a local Fiat dealer in Farnham.  The mileages are all filled in and extra work is noted.  In 2008 it was treated to a new cambelt at 20,129 miles. 

There is a V5c and an MoT certificate that is valid until 26th September 2022, along with an Owners wallet with all the books.

The Interior


The inside is quite remarkable as you would not be able to guess that it had been driven 47,000 miles.  We had a very close look when taking the photographs and can say that we didn’t see a single mark, scratch, tear or any signs of wear.  The 90s style fabric seats are a fresh as day one, not a mark to be seen.  

The rear seats look like they’ve never been used, the rear seat belts confirm the lack of use; they just look new.  The plastics have all lasted remarkably well with no stickiness on the buttons or fading of the grey plastic parts.  The glovebox appears to not have been used at all, not even for gloves!  The carpets and roof lining are clean and overall we were amazed by the condition.

The Exterior


The outside of the Peugeot is almost as immaculate as the inside.  There are a few small scratches here and there, but you’d only find them on close inspection.  There is a small dent from the inside on the bonnet; it looks likely it was closed on a tool. There is a 5cm long scratch on the driver’s side rear quarter, just above the tail light.  

A small scuff on the rubbing strip on the same corner and on the driver’s door, and a scrape on the edge of the front wheel arch were all we could find.  Generally the paintwork is in excellent condition, bright and all one shade with no evidence of blooming.  It’s likely the Peugeot spent the majority of the past 24 years in a warm garage. 

The tyres are all Michelin Energy including the under car mounted spare. All are about half worn, but slightly aged.

The Mechanics


We drove the Peugeot to the photoshoot and we were transported back to the 90’s at first turn of the wheel – no power steering, but not a problem.  

Everything works, the engine sounded smooth and was willing, the gear change was exactly as you would expect.  All in all it drove like a new 106 would have done in the 1990s, but in the 21st Century!  A look under the bonnet reveals a nice tidy engine bay; everything appears to be as it left the factory – no surprises here.  

There are a few tell tales to the age of the car, some marks here and there, it’s not Concours, but it is extraordinarily tidy.

The Appeal


Usually it’s the sports versions of any model that live on after the more mundane versions have gone to the scrappy.  It is refreshing to find a low budget car that hasn’t been run into the ground, one that has obviously been cherished and cared for.  

Who would it appeal to? Well we think such a lovely example would appeal to a collector who seeks quality and originality over performance.  Alternatively there are plenty of young drivers who would agree that the Peugeot would be a fantastic first car. 

Classic, with old skool looks, and just enough performance to be fun without breaking the bank.
