Background
Mercedes-Benz has an enviable reputation for luxury cars and the W210 series is a good example. Also known as the E-class, the W210 it was produced from 1995 to 2002, as direct competition to BMW’s 5 Series and the Lexus GS.
The W210 was the dawn of a new look for Mercedes; gone were the slab sides and chunky rectangular headlamps of preceding models.
It is a great example of the sleek and timeless styling that Mercedes is well known for, particularly the oval headlamps which were a trademark of this series.
History
This smart E320 CDi was first registered in September 1999 having been ordered from Riverdale Mercedes. With the 3.2 litre turbo 6 cylinder diesel engine, mated to a five speed automatic gearbox, it has a handy 194 bhp with just under 350lb/ft of torque.
As an Elegance model, resplendent in Titanite Red Metallic paint, with a luxurious Java leather interior with wood accents it cost a not insubstantial £36,296 plus the purchasers two year old Mercedes E300 as part exchange! The first owner kept the car until it was sold to the Vendors family in 2011.
The Paperwork
There is a good amount of history with the car, starting with the Mercedes Certificate of Conformity, and a full leather wallet with all the books. The service book is present, and contains 9 stamps through to September 2017 at 82,744 miles.
It appears the Mercedes received main dealer care until about 2013 when the car was looked after by Capital Cars, and then Raynes Park Motors, with plenty of bills for regular maintenance and annual MoT tests. There are plenty of old MoTs and a tax disc on file, the earliest MoT is from 2002 when the Mercedes had covered 20, 681 miles.
The current MoT is valid until September 2021. There are two V5c documents, one being from when the Mercedes had a cherished plate, the original number plate has now returned to the car. There are 3 keys and the codes for both radios within the history folder.
The Interior
The interior is typical Mercedes; understated, luxurious, and showing very little wear for its age. The leather in most places is as good as new; only the driver’s seat appears used, although the leather is all intact and would look as nice as the rest of the interior with a good clean.
The steering wheel shows a little wear, and the plastic covers for the mirrors in the sun visors are detached (they are in the armrest). Generally you’d be hard pushed to guess the age of the car by the appearance of the interior as it has aged so well.
There is a replacement Mercedes CD radio in the dash, the original Mercedes Cassette radio will come with the car.
As can be seen in the photographs the carpets and headlining are clean, the sill plates show only slight marks and all the wood veneer is in excellent condition.
The Exterior
Titanite Red is a colour that really suits the E class shape, and compliments the leather interior.
There are only a few marks in the paint, less than you might expect for a car of this age. The worst of these is a small dent and scratch on the leading edge of the bonnet near the Mercedes badge and a couple of small supermarket door dings on the flanks of the car. The paint all shines well and is a testament to the original quality.
The glass is all unmarked, the headlights and driving lamps show no stone chips or cracks. The wheels show only minor curb rash and are all shod with good condition Continental Ecocontact tyres.
The Mechanics
With only 6,000 miles since its last dealer service, and with plenty of documented regular service throughout its life this Mercedes appears to be in excellent mechanical condition.
The Mercedes manoeuvred easily for the photoshoot purring away with now squeaks or clunks. Mercedes saloons have a reputation for longevity, and we believe there is no reason to suspect that this example wouldn’t be good for many more miles to come.
The Appeal
Many of these E class Mercedes of this age have intergalactic mileages, and it refreshing to find one that has obviously been cherished by only two owners over 22 years.
With a substantial history showing great care and only 89,000 miles covered from new, and in such unmolested original condition, this E class will surely provide someone with limo levels of comfort for many miles yet.
