The W210 E-Class, launched in 1995, pushed the model range firmly into the upper echelons of the mid-size luxury car market.
Major changes were made by the W210 E-class compared to the earlier version, including four large oval headlights that gave the Merc an updated image intended to attract younger buyers. The ‘new’ E-class was 40mm longer and 58mm wider and offered significantly more interior room but was still considered mid-size.
The W210 E55 was a game-changing super-saloon and the final Mercedes-AMG built entirely by hand at the AMG facility in Affalterbach. Subsequent AMG vehicles were built in various Mercedes-Benz plants, with just the AMG engines hand-assembled in Affalterbach and dispatched to the respective Mercedes’ plant for fitting.
Imported from Japan in May this year, we are advised by the importer that the car had two keepers in that country. Regrettably, no material history is evidenced for the car however, the vendor does have the mileage verification certificate from Japan.
The seller has confirmed to us that all UK taxes have been paid and this Mercedes is clear to register in the UK, meaning the lucky new owner will be the first documented owner this side of the world. Due to the backlog at HMRC though, not all of the paperwork has come through yet, but it is starting to arrive. There is also mileage export certificate to verify the mileage of the Mercedes.
The seller has also confirmed that there is an MOT certificate with the car, issued approximately 4 weeks prior to the time of writing.
No other paperwork is present, but the car will be accompanied by various service, audio and vehicle handbooks as pictured.
Given its 22 years, the full leather interior of the car presents very well and is in good condition. The boot space is clean and tidy and houses a full-sized 5th-alloy spare. There was evidence of moisture under the floor covering (as pictured).
All door cards and fitted switchgear look to be in very good order, as do the door sills and carpets which, understandably, do reflect their 22 years. All door electrics work as intended. There is a small crack in the backing veneer of the passenger door.
The roof lining is in good condition around the factory-fitted sunroof – a notably vulnerable point. Unfortunately, the rear area of the roof lining has dropped, resulting in it now being pinned back in place. All grab handles are present and in good working order.
The centre console cubby near the gearshift carries the signature of the AMG hand-assembler – a nice traditional touch.
Original kit includes: Leather furniture throughout, electric windows, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, AC/climate control, electric seats, central locking, cooled/heated seats, privacy glass and electric pedal adjust.
Additional equipment: AM/FM radio, CD player, DVD player, factory alarm, keyless entry (fob need new battery), satnav and Bluetooth kit.
The exterior is in very good condition and the maroon paintwork presents the car in a favourable light. Indeed, during the photoshoot, several passers-by commented on its first-impression as being ‘tidy’ and ‘in good nick’. The vendor has offered to replace the current grille with the original one.
A few exterior blemishes commensurate with the vehicle’s age include both wing-mirror surround rubbers partly perished and a few scuffs on the lower bodywork as pictured. Those little matters aside, this is a very tidy example of a late 90’s E55 AMG.
While repositioning the car for the accompanying photographs, the car delivered the appropriate – and delightful – AMG sounds. The automatic transmission engaged smoothly and the power take-up when asked was smooth and sonorous.
The car appears to be in very good mechanical order and, as pictured, its underneath presents very clean and tidy, too.
Who doesn’t love a sonorous V8 engine? It may be 22 years old, but it sure sounds good!
Back in 2002, Autocar wrote: “Gentlemen, start your engines! The race to build the ultimate autobahn basher shows no signs of slowing up as Mercedes charges into the fray with its all-new E55 super saloon”.
Technically, the car built on the strengths of the basic Mercedes-Benz E-Class at the time, which many rated as the finest executive saloon money could buy. For its time, interior space was said to be generous and build quality second to none.
The starters gun to an all-new power battle between performance car manufacturers, the Mercedes E55 AMG remains a much sought-after motor among AMG-aficionados and there are few that present as well as this one.
