RESERVE LOWERED - 1999 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 CL

Highlights

• One lady owner from new
• Just 42k miles
• Recently serviced

The Background

Volkswagen’s perennial small front wheel drive hatchback, the Polo, has been around since 1974. The mark 3 Polo that we see here (sometimes called mark 4 because the previous version received a substantial facelift, but let’s not split hairs) was launched in 1994.

This was the first point at which the Polo was available as a five door model, lagging its major competitors by several years. The engines and equipment levels also played catch up but the VW image at the time definitely positioned it as a cut above its mainstream rivals.

Today, the Polo retains its desirable image and, with a reputation for solid build quality, it’s a popular choice as a runabout and also attracts interest from the VW scene where they can be found modified to various degrees.

The History

First delivered on 20 November 1999 in Mitcham, Surrey, this is a one owner car. There are seven stamps from main dealers in the service book and a recent stamp from an independent garage.

On closer inspection there is a gap between 2008 and 2019 in the main dealer stamps but a glance at the MOT history shows that although it covered very few miles each year, it did have the annual check and has had a few items rectified. This suggests that it was receiving regular maintenance but not the accompanying stamps in the service book.

The Paperwork

All of the owner’s manuals are present together with the aforementioned service book. The V5 is present and the MOT which has no advisories expires on 27 September 2022. The spare key and alarm fob is also included.

The Interior

A combination of VW’s reputation for quality and the limited mileage that this car has covered would lead one to expect that the interior would be well preserved and it doesn’t disappoint.

There is barely any wear to the seats or carpets and the dashboard and steering wheel are unmarked. It was specified with a factory fitted glass sunroof and electric windows and these operate correctly along with all the other buttons, switches and dials.

The headlining is clean and free from sag and the boot is clean and tidy with a hard wearing rubber insert to keep it that way.

The Exterior

The metallic black paintwork still has its lustre and the bodywork polishes up well so that the car retains its premium feel.

There are a few stone chips as you might expect and the roof bears the kind of scar that is common for cars kept in domestic garages with a scratch on the nearside of the sunroof which has been touched in. Overall, though, it presents very well.

The factory five spoke alloy wheels are all in good condition with only minor marks and the tyres all have good tread remaining. Underneath, meanwhile, all looks solid.

The Mechanics

Under the bonnet the engine bay is very tidy and the 1.4 litre engine fires up first time. While it’s not going win many drag races, it pulls cleanly and is smooth through the gears.

There is a slight whine from the gearbox in 3rd and 4th but it’s mentioned for completeness rather than sounding like it’s anywhere near being a problem. Other than that, there are no unusual noises from the drivetrain or suspension and the car drives very nicely.

The Appeal

With a premium image and above average reliability, a Polo of this era can make a great daily driver. However with the mileage and condition of this example, we suspect that the next owner will want to keep it original.

But while not quite a ‘time warp’ car, this one isn’t far off and that decision will be for whoever wins the auction. So whether you want a tidy runabout, future Festival of the Unexceptional entry or basis for a feature in Performance VW, you’d better get bidding.

Making a secure purchase on Car & Classic Auctions

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 5-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000+ £500.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
