Launched in 1999 to celebrate Honda’s 50th anniversary, the S2000 has firmly cemented itself in the automotive ‘hall of fame’ as one of the best-handling roadsters of all time.
Thanks to its 50:50 weight distribution (achieved by mounting the engine entirely behind the front axle) clever double-wishbone suspension setup and rev-loving VTEC engine, the S2000 is an absolute hoot to drive, and garners plentiful praise even today, some 22 years after the last cars rolled off the production line.
That handling prowess is further enhanced by the car being coupled to a Torsen limited-slip differential in the rear, with power being sent via a six-speed manual gearbox.
Headlines were also made thanks to the aforementioned 2.0l engine. With a total power output of 124 hp per litre from the engine, it revs all the way up to between 8-9000 rpm depending on the model, which can be enjoyed via the wonderfully retro-futuristic digital dash.
Thanks to their enthusiastic following, strong support network and excellent reputation, the S2000 in all its forms has truly become a ‘modern classic’ and should be on any self-respecting petrolhead’s ‘bucket list’ of drives.
Having been purchased by the vendor five years ago, this Silverstone Silver AP1 (pre-facelift) S2000 was bought as a daily driver and to compete in sprint / hillclimb events. After a number of excellent and successful years competing, the S2000 has been kept in storage for the last year, and it’s now time for it to go to a new home where it will be used and appreciated.
Accompanying the car is the original stamped service handbook, original handover form from 2001, and the vendor’s own record of servicing. There are no MOT tests on Guernsey so there are no such records present with this car.
Since this has been a competition car for the current owner, the interior has been extensively modified for purpose, with a number of race-focused parts fitted.
Most notably, the standard seats have been replaced by a set of Cobra pro-fit bucket seats which are in excellent condition, with barely any signs of wear. While these are FIA approved, the approval certificate runs out this year.
Along with these seats, a purple weighted gear shifter is fitted. The seller advises that a previously fitted quick release mechanism has been removed and the steering wheel in the pictures is the correct one that will be sold with the car. The interior presents in excellent condition, with the carpet in good shape, especially around the centre console area.
All switches and features are reported to be working correctly,.
The Silverstone Silver exterior of this S2000 presents in well-used condition with a number of marks and modifications from its time as a competition car. In the words of the vendor “you don’t break eight records without a few marks along the way!” The majority of the marks are to the replacement front bumper, though the seller notes that there are a few other minor marks around the car, including a couple of tiny dents in the drivers door, a scuff on the rear bumper, and a paint reaction on the nearside rear quarter panel.
The folding soft top has been replaced with a like-for-like unit during the vendor’s ownership, and has been fully weather sealed. There is a small area that has been patched, but it is completely waterproof. The headlights have also been restored, while the factory side lights have been fitted with LEDs for a more modern appearance.
The stock wheels have been replaced with a staggered set of 17x8 and 17x9 Rota Fighter units, which complement the motorsport theme of the car well and have given this S2K a purposeful stance in collaboration with the lowered altitude, courtesy of the aftermarket Yellowspeed coilover suspension. There are a couple of small kerbing marks on the wheels, though these are very subtle.
While it is not fitted in the photographs, the vendor also has a replacement front bumper included in the sale, which is currently in primer.
Thanks to its time being used as a competitive vehicle, there are a number of modifications that have been made to this S2000, and it’s a long way from standard. The good news is that it has also been well taken care of during both the vendor’s ownership and by the previous owner, who was a Honda technician. While this means that there are some patches in the service records from the owners doing ‘at home’ services, there is still a history present with the car to give an indication of just how well it has been looked after.
Underneath and in the engine bay, it is clear that this car has been cherished and maintained well, with the underside in particular being impressively clean and with plenty of upgraded and refreshed parts.
Due to the number of performance modifications that have been fitted, it is easiest to read them as an itemised list. Here is the full list of performance modifications and upgrades:
- Invidia Q300 exhaust with titanium tips - Japspeed decat pipe (not currently fitted) - Ultra Racing front strut brace - Yellowspeed 33-way adjustable coilover suspension - New front calipers - Stripped and rebuilt rear calipers - EBC drilled and grooved brake discs all round, fitted with EBC Yellowstuff pads - Quaife LSD - 4.77 final drive - Braided brake and clutch lines
Along with the upgrades, the timing chain tensioner was replaced with a genuine Honda part two years ago, while the bearings were all replaced in the diff when it was rebuilt.
The 17-inch Rota Fighter wheels are shod in semi-slick Toyo R888R tyres with plenty of life left in them. There are no reported faults, errors or issues with the car.
While there are no MOTs on Guernsey, the vendor said there should be “no issues” with passing one on the mainland, with the exception of the aftermarket exhaust, though the car will come with the factory exhaust should the new owner wish to swap it over.
With summer on its way, a 9000 RPM redline and stunning styling, the Honda S2000 is the perfect car for some summer fun.
With this particular example benefitting from a number of performance-enhancing upgrades, this little rocket will be a true B-road monster and can be used for further competition, having already proven its ability numerous times in its current ownership.
However, if you wanted to convert the car back to its original appearance, the vendor has stated that plenty of original factory parts are in storage, should the buyer wish to take these too and convert this AP1 back to its factory specification.

About Max Bids
C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 10-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
If your bid is below the reserve price you'll bid that amount if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a bid above the reserve we will only go up to the reserve price.
Once the reserve has been met C&C will make sure you are the highest bidder using the bidding increments stated below, keeping you in the lead up until your maximum bid.
£0 to £10,000
£10,000 to £50,000
Automatically outbid immediately
When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.
Matching max bids
When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
