By the time the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the original Range Rover arrived in 2000, the then-current model was the original’s successor, generally known as the P38 after the building in which the development team was based. To celebrate, Land Rover commissioned a special run of 100 P38 Range Rovers, 50 with rear entertainment and 50 without, and all with considerable extra attention from Land Rover Special Vehicles.
Finished in Wimbledon Green with a green and cream leather interior, amber-tinted burr maple trim and all the toys, they all packed the 4.6 litre V8 engine and automatic gearbox. Externally they are distinguished by body-coloured bumpers and a collection of identifying badges.
These rare and sought-after models represent the pinnacle of the P38, a model which has in the opinion of many been under appreciated for some time and is now gaining in value as values of its forerunner continue their upward ascent.
This example was first registered on 30 March 2001 and, judging by the stamps in the service book, lived oop North until 2008 when it was serviced in Croydon, then back up to the Midlands since then. The records show that it was serviced at least once a year to 2013 with only one exception in 2007.
The current owner, a serial P38 owner, acquired it in 2013 but with his job taking him out of the country for extended periods, the car has seen very little usage during his tenure and has for most of the time been kept in dry storage. He had it recommissioned in September 2020 with fresh paint, a full service with all fluids changed, a retrimmed steering wheel and new tyres, all of which came to a total cost of over £5,000. However, it’s still not seen much use and with too many cars on the go, he has decided to downsize his small collection.
The car’s original document wallet is present and contains a full set of owner’s manuals, including the instructions for the rear entertainment system. The service book contains a full set of stamps as outlined above and there are receipts for the more recent work. Quite recently the owner has managed to track down an original brochure for the 30th Anniversary Edition which will also be included, as well as a set of commemorative promotional pictures.
The V5C in the owner’s name currently has the private plate pictured on it but the car will be sold with its original registration mark, Y629 SET, in place. As the current MOT is about to expire at the time of writing, it will be renewed for a yearbefore sale.
When you open the door you are greeted with the unique 30th Anniversary sill plates and a fine looking maple wood trim. Climbing aboard reveals a cabin that is clearly a cut above the usual Range Rover fayre, with the maple extending around most of the front seats and also used for picnic tables on the back of the front seats which, at least to the untrained eye, wouldn’t look out of place in a Rolls or Bentley of a similar vintage.
The electrically-operated green leather seats are soft, comfortable and, in common with the rest of the interior, showing very little in the way of wear. The owner reported that all of the buttons and switches for the many accessories (including the rear seat entertainment) work as they should which, frankly, was a relief as it would have taken most of the day to test them all, but that the cruise control is sadly playing up and there hasn’t been time to address that.
Between the front seats, the lid to the storage box is neatly reversible to reveal four cupholders and below it sits the DVD player for the rear screens which is controlled with an included remote. After a trip to pretty much any charity shop, that should see the kids entertained for all time at minimal outlay. The original headphones have their own storage nets attached the roof lining, an area which is the only significant item that might need to be addressed as it has come adrift at the rear on both sides.
The boot area is clean and tidy and houses a full size alloy beneath the floor, together with the original jack and towbar attachment which looks to be unused. In all, it’s a lovely place to spend time and it’s easy to imagine that long journeys would be a pleasure.
Fresh from its recommissioning, the car presents very well with a deep lustre to its Wimbledon green coach work which is nicely enhanced by a cream pinstripe down the flanks. The panels are all straight with no obvious blemishes to report while the wheels are all in good condition and are shod with a fresh set of Pirelli tyres. Side steps help with entry and egress and there is a towbar with detachable hitch stashed under the rear bumper.
Glazing and seals are all in good order save for one area highlighted in the photos on the nearside rear door where there is some bubbling at the top of the door frame. Underneath shows some surface corrosion but nothing more, reflecting the recent years of dry storage. Overall, it looks every inch range-topper and it will surely make its next owner very proud.
The engine bay is in very original condition and the 4.6 litre V8 fires immediately with a very pleasant growl. Closer inspection of the exhaust tips reveals that a Powerflow exhaust has been fitted at some stage which really enhances the soundtrack.
We’re pleased to report that the height adjustment of the air suspension operates smoothly and without delay but, as the car is currently SORN, it wasn’t possible to take it for a full road test. However, the owner reports that it drives very well, with smooth operation of the automatic gearbox up and down the box and no untoward noises from the suspension or drivetrain. Mechnically, then, it should be ready to go.
The original Range Rover was always going to be a hard act to follow but with the market is now waking up to the fact that the P38 did move the game on and values are now rising. The specification that we see here is the pinnacle of the range and its high-end interior and rarity surely make for the best investment potential.
While there are a couple of items to attend to on this example to get it to show-winning condition, there’s nothing that would stop you enjoying it immediately.
