The Background

Originally launched in 1954, the SL is a two-seater roadster which has grown in popularity to become one of the most iconic models in Mercedes-Benz history, providing the perfect mixture of performance and luxury. Over the years the cars were available as a soft top convertible, then moving forward with the addition of a removable hardtop as well as the hardtop.
In 2002, Mercedes stepped up the game with the SL, with a whole host of technological wizardry added to the grand tourer. One of the main changes was the fully removable hardtop roof at the touch of a single button. You could be sitting at the traffic lights and within 16-20 seconds the roof would be off ready to enjoy the sunshine. This main feature alone proved a huge selling point for the luxurious German two-seater roadster.

The History

The original owner who purchased the SL new, owned it up until 2006, when he sadly passed away. The car was then passed to his son who kept the car and didn't really use it other than a few hundred miles per year. He kept the car until 2017, and with the lack of use, sold it to his best friend who ran it very slightly more, but it was only slightly. This was the reason for him parting with it to another friend who put it into his private collection.
However, the decision to reduce the collection means that the SL500 has become available for a new home. There has been a recent light recommissioning carried out in 2019, which saw a service carried out along with some general maintenance at a cost of £1,845.00. Since then the car has only covered approximately 2,000 miles, another reason for the sale. It just isn't getting the use it deserves.

The Paperwork

Ok, so, with just 12,316 miles, the folder containing the invoices has unfortunately been lost, leaving the Mercedes with no paperwork other than the owner’s manuals, which have been kept in the glove box.
There is a receipt for the recommissioning work in May 2019, and the recent MOT certificate, which was carried out on 10th September 2021.
The V5 is present and shows 3 previous keepers, there is one key.

The Interior

Inside the SL is quite as you would imagine a car with 12,000 miles on, pretty much immaculate throughout. The dark grey Nappa leather seats are in excellent condition and fully working, as you would expect. The door cards are in a matching condition with no obvious marks to point out.
Sitting in the driver’s seat you are faced with the spotless dashboard that is all in good condition, with no marks or scuffs or cracks to be seen. The instruments are all in working order with no warning lights displayed, other than an overdue service message ( the last service was less than 2000 miles ago). The odometer is showing a reading of 12,316 miles. Steering you in the right direction is the half leather half wood steering wheel, which is in excellent order, with no wear to the outer edge or any of the buttons.
The SL has a set of mats fitted, which are in excellent condition. Fitted from new means that the main carpet is also in spotless condition. The same can be said for the boot area.

The Exterior

Finished in Capri Blue Metallic, this stunning SL500  looks fantastic and with such low miles, the only things to point out are one stone chip to the bonnet and a scratch to the passenger corner front skirt. Other than that, the car is in stunning condition. The bonnet aligns as it should with the wings, and sits evenly over the headlights. The fog and headlights are in excellent condition with no cracks or chips to mention.

Around to the sides of the Mercedes, the door gaps align nice and equal to both sides. There are no dinks or dents which we could see. The hardtop looks to work as quickly as it should, operating smoothly as it opens and closes.

To the rear, and it's so clean looking with the all red tail lights against the Capri Blue Metallic paintwork. The bumper is free from any scuffs. The SL500 and three pointed star badges are bright and clean. Two tailpipes exit the bumper playing the perfect soundtrack of the 5.0 litre.

The wheels are all in good condition. There is some kerb damage to one and a couple of small marks on another. The tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport, which do have some tread remaining for the new keeper, but they are starting to perish slightly with age. This has been mentioned as an advisory for the last MOT on 10th September 2021.

The Mechanics

The V8 in this lovely SL500 fires up perfectly at the first flick of the key, and sounds fantastic exiting through the twin exhausts. There are no untoward noises to be heard from the silky smooth 5.0 litre V8. With 302 bhp on tap, the SL500 is reported to pull well through all of the gears, with the gear change being nice and smooth all the way through the 5 gear range.
The car sits nice and level and is reported to handle well, with no noises coming from the suspension components. Drilled discs at the front bring the SL to a halt nice and straight. There is no real lip on the edge of the disc, showing they should be good for plenty of miles.
As you can imagine, with this amount of miles and the car always being stored inside, the underside is in excellent order.

The Appeal

A rare chance to own a stunner of a 2002 Mercedes SL500. In amazing condition, with ultra low miles, currently at 12,316 miles, it's safe to say there’s plenty of life left in the SL500.
A full service less than 2,000 miles ago, along with some recommissioning work, has ensured the SL is in fine fettle for the new owner to be.
What are you waiting for? It's time to get your hands on one of the most technically advanced and stylish cars of its time.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
