The Background

The E39 is the fourth generation of BMW’s 5-series executive car, and was manufactured from 1995 to 2004. The 530i was part of the ‘facelift’ range (also known as LCI models) introduced in 2000.

Autocar magazine said of the 5-series: “The car’s blend of talents has always been highly commendable and rarely matched, offering supreme ride comfort, cutting-edge interiors and, whenever it takes your fancy, exciting and entertaining rear-wheel-drive dynamism.”

The History

LV 03 XKE was first registered in March 2003. The current owner purchased the car in 2008, from Hexagon BMW in north London, and has spent a great deal of time and money on maintaining it to a very high standard.

Having bought the car as a treat to himself on a significant birthday, the vendor has found himself using it less and less in recent years and an upcoming house move has led to the decision to sell the car.

The Paperwork

The car comes with a large sheaf of paperwork, MoT certificates and receipts that reflect the vendor’s care and attention. MoT tests and servicing under the current ownership have been carried out at a BMW dealer in Cobham, Surrey. The service book records every service since the car was new.

The car also comes with the original document wallet and all instruction manuals, including that for the radio and CD player.

The Exterior

The car looks attractive in its Aegean Blue paintwork. The vendor believes that only 300 examples of the model were made in this colour scheme, and only 150 of these were the petrol version. There is no evidence of rust at all but there are a number of stone-chips on the bonnet that have been retouched in the correct paint colour but are noticeable – see the pictures. There is also a stone-chip on the nearside front door. The paint on one side of the front bumper is starting to show evidence of cracking.

All four wheels are in excellent condition and the tyres all have plenty of tread.

The front and rear lights are in first-class condition and all work as they should.

The Interior

The car’s interior belies its age and mileage; the leather seats are all in excellent condition and the carpets are exceptionally clean. The M-sport spec includes bolstered sport seats with lumbar adjustment, while the rear seats feature a centre armrest.

All four interior door panels are immaculate. All the switchgear appears to work as it should.

The dashboard and centre console show no significant scratches or marks, and the M-badged door sills are also in excellent condition.

The boot is clean and tidy, complete with original luggage net, and under the floor panel is a spare wheel that appears never to have been used. The vendor reports that some of the original tools are missing from the storage box on the underside of the boot lid.

The Mechanicals

The car starts readily on the first turn of the key, the engine has a healthy note, and there is no evidence of blue smoke from the exhaust. The car appears to drive as it should, with no obvious handling issues. The automatic gearbox seems to work smoothly and quietly.

Under the bonnet, the engine is remarkably clean and tidy; again this reflects the care taken by the owner to keep the car in excellent condition throughout.

The radio and boot-mounted CD changer both work, as does the sat-nav system.

The Appeal

Regarded as one of the best-ever 5-series BMWs, the E39 is a refined modern classic that is becoming increasingly rare. The cars are renowned for being built to very high standards. LV 03 XKE is a fine example of the model that has clearly been cared for and maintained extremely well. Its interior in particular belies the car’s age and mileage. With below-average mileage and only a few minor cosmetic issues, this car should provide many more miles of enjoyable and comfortable motoring to its new owner.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
