Launched in 1997, the ML Mercedes was developed to replace its predecessor the G-class SUV. It was the first luxury 4x4 to feature electronic stability control and along with both front and side impact airbags, earned the ML the highest marks in insurance industry crash tests.
Featuring permanent four-wheel drive & traction control, they quickly earned a reputation for exceptional off-road performance as well as being a fabulous on road car to drive.
The ML55 AMG version first appeared in 1999 & features a 5.4 litre, AMG built V8 engine with modified body work and suspension upgrades.
All together this performance package added up to a power increase from 288 hp to 350 hp and gave this 4x4 a 0-60 time of just under 7 seconds which is really quite impressive for a large SUV.
Supplied new from Mercedes Benz in Milton Keynes in July 2003, this ML comes with a full-service history on the vehicles electronic log & backed up by its service book.
Only recently purchased by the vendor, who has decided that it’s not for him & is looking for a smaller car to purchase.
Initially serviced by main dealers and then subsequently Mercedes specialists, and there are a number of receipts & bills in the car’s history file supporting this.
It’s has a current Mot certificate until October 2021.
Well what a very well spec’d vehicle this is, leather interior, sat nav, air con, sunroof, detachable tow bar etc, all of which would appear to be in working order.
As can be seen in the photos, overall, it’s in great condition, with just the odd scratch & scrape on the leather upholstery over the years.
It does show a little of its previously busy life on the outside. Again, hopefully the photos show this, but there are a number of scratches & scrapes on all four corners of the car, with stone chips on the rear wings and a small crease on the o/s front wing.
The rear bumper has damage, and the bonnet shows signs of rust in one patch. The n/s we think may had some paintwork touched up as there is a little overspray on some of the door seals
Overall, though, the exterior could be easily refreshed by a competent technician bringing it back to its former glory.
With a full-service history, this Merc would appear to have been well looked after on the mechanical front. The engine started easily when moved around for the photoshoot and sounded quiet and smooth.
No warning lights came on and it moved easily into drive and reverse when manoeuvred.
Well, it has to be that great sounding, thumping great V8 engine which gives this ML55 driving appeal. Great for long trips around the country in comfort, but then able to whisk it around twisting country roads or tow your horsebox to the gymkhana.
A wolf in sheep’s clothing if ever there was one.
