・Complete Mercedes 9-stamp service history with extensive invoices
・A high specification, rare SL55 with under 30,000 miles on the clock
・Superb condition car with impressivesupercharged V8 engine and auto gearbox
Going on sale in 2002, it’s argued that in making the SL55 AMG, Mercedes-Benz had produced the best overall car in the history of the business. Just what made it so special? Well, it offered the perfect blend of performance, style, and comfort, all backed up by a very special engine that was able to produce 493HP – this uniquely balanced package placed the SL 55 AMG among other supercars of its time. Under the very long, elegant bonnet is, of course the thumping 5.4L supercharged V8 which is a very close relation to the legendary McLaren SLR engine – hand built, of course, in Germany.
Famous owners of the SL55 have included everyone from Steve Jobs to Tom Jones and Jeremy Clarkson – these names giving just some indication of the drive quality, innovation and presence that this car offers. This 2004 example is an original release version of the car using the 5 speed automatic gearbox and is finished in the handsome Obsidian black metallic paint.
First registered in April 2004, the car has had only five previous registered keepers, all of whom owned the car as part of their collections and thus each added very little mileage to the clock. The current owner acquired the car around one year ago and – owing to a range of other cars in his garage - has driven the car sparingly on dry days, adding less than 1,000 miles since his ownership.
A comprehensive folder of history has been kept through the cars lifetime, including with it the original owner’s handbook and fully stamped service record, all of which took place under Mercedes-Benz care. In September 2020, the car received a service which included the replacement of fluids, filters and spark plugs at a cost of over £1,100. Plenty of other service invoices are included with the car to detail any replacement parts and service items that were required at each interval. The V5 is of course present, along with 2 sets of keys.
Dripping with features, this is a luxury car without compromise. Inside you’ll find it kitted out with numerous factory options including sat nav, heated (and air-conditioned) massage function, memory seats, a fully electric folding hardtop, panoramic glass roof and even a built in Nokia phone. Thanks to its low use, the Charcoal Nappa leather seats remain in brilliant condition, with no notable marks or deterioration to them, nor any other trim. Original Mercedes floor mats are found to be in good condition and with minimal signs of wear.
The impressive electric folding roof functions perfectly – retreating in just 16 seconds. It’s a similar story for the electric window switches, heater controls and other various functional buttons, all working faultlessly. The owner does note that, owing to a battery replacement in 2019, the start/stop button atop the gear selector doesn’t currently function and just requires a simple re-code to fix this.
The dramatic lines, long bonnet and angular cooling fins found around the SL55 all combine to create an incredibly confident looking car. Having inspected the condition of the car in the dry we found the Obsidian Black paintwork to be in lovely condition, only spotting the odd minor stone chips as are to be expected for a car of this age. The 18” AMG Turbine alloys appear original and are in excellent condition, recently having had all four shod in new Pirelli P-Zero tires, removing this cost for the next owner.
The owner states that the car has no mechanical faults and requires nothing from its next owner - with the most recent MOT test passing with no advisories helping to substantiate this claim. Roaring into life and idling smoothly, the car steers, and stops as impeccably as you would expect for something of this class and with a maintenance record of this standing. It’s worth noting that these cars benefit from Mercedes’ active suspension which uses hydraulic fluid – unlike some examples, this car has maintained a perfectly level ride suggesting it is leak-free.
This was an incredibly expensive car when new and which now offers the potential for what could easily be described as “a bit of a bargain” when you consider the rarity, performance, and outright desirability of this car. This is a low-mileage example of the breed, presented in a timeless colour scheme and in very good condition throughout, which is sure to delight its next owner.
